something where the outcome is SOLELY determined by voting isnt a damn sport, its an athletic exhibition or something, but it isnt a sport. You need a measurable, objective means to judge who wins. 8/12/2008 8:52:22 PM |

no, just saw some judging shit and I know I'm not an expert but there was SOOOO little difference between a 9.5 and 7.1, not saying the 7.1 score would have won with another judge but they probably could have just as easily scored it 8.2 to 7.9 8/12/2008 8:59:33 PM |

at least fencing has a definite outcome. gymnastics you could be flawless and get a 15.8 or something while somebody else is flawless and get a 16.3. Judges could have things against America or other countries (since most people seem to hate us) 8/12/2008 9:24:32 PM |

^^^ exactly
by the way, my previous definition involved:
competitors must (or at least have the potential to) directly, physically influence each other either with a part of their body or an instrument that is wielded by the person

ah, so golf is no longer a sport...unless you count being in the same grouping direct interaction...which would make your interpretation of your own definition loose at best
and badminton is ridiculously difficult

no, there is potential for a ball to strike another ball... very little chance, but there is a chance...
and "difficult" has nothing to do with it, brain surgery is "hard" but its not a sport

so the small chance of 2 1.86 inch diameter spheres touching on a 15,000 square yard surface (just a guesstimation of a 300x50 fairway) counts as direct interaction?

^^ Game, not a sport
(unless in darts if your dart happens to hit theirs and somehow knock it out of the board and their score changes or they have to rethrow it then it would be a sport)
I dont think this is the case but have never played hardcore by the rules darts
^ yup. you got to be objective here, black or white, otherwise you get into judgement calls "well, thats enough chance so that one counts, but this one which is .3% lower of chance doesnt etc"

Sport (not to be confused with 'game')
*something grown people do for play that does not involve... -using a writing utensil -using a firearm, unless target is inanimate, or motion is controlled (not random...i.e. live animals)
*must involve physical action (no chess or poker)
what else 8/12/2008 9:43:14 PM |

Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
hmmm now that could be added, goes against the "physically touching" part but I will think about it
I just really dont think something that theoretically could be held where each person does their "run" by themselves 1000s of miles away and then you just compare scores/times should be a sport. You arent technically competing against someone else you are just trying for your best score and hope that it beats someone else's best score. Its not like a diver would see another diver score a 7 and be like "oh sweet, I can just score a 8.5 and win so i wont try as hard"

Golf has a definite score though. You count the strokes, whoever hits it in in the fewest strokes wins. Swimming and running have times, you can't say they aren't right, or could be skewed by personal opinion. If you told 50 people to look at a gymnast routine you might get 50 different scores. 8/12/2008 9:51:12 PM |
goalielax All American 11252 Posts user info edit post |
right, but if you look up, he said he already had a rule where for it to be a sport it had to involve some shance of direct interaction or other bullshit such as that
i'm not arguing for the sake of arguing, i'm arguing because you're making some dumbass statement that excludes a huge percentage of sports from being real sports

well then we disagree on that point. I think things like swimming you should be in the same pool, golf should be in the same group or something if possible, but really golf you're always just playing against the course to get the lowest score so that's kinda different 8/12/2008 9:53:52 PM |

i saw the relay...i just think it's silly for you to count some minuscule fraction of a chance of interaction such as 2 golf balls hitting as interaction and not counting the psychological interaction of a gymnast watching another gymnast performing as no interaction 8/12/2008 9:56:04 PM |
Jaybee1200 Suspended 56200 Posts user info edit post |
I love how people get SO upset... its not like it being a sport or not makes it any more or less worthy. All I am saying is that to me, a sport is something where the people can physically influence one another and the winner is determined by a score (like an actual event=point type thing, not someones opinion), time, or event (KO).
The gymnasts could be in separate rooms, not see each other at all, and still be able to do the same event... are they nervous? sure, but they dont have to worry about someone else physically messing up their performance
I could be at a track, at 2am, and try to run a 40 as fast I can.
You put me up against Reggie Bush in a race, and I would still do the same damn thing... him being there wouldnt physically make affect my performance
