I'll stop hijacking another thread.
Vista SP1 4 gb 2.5ghz duo
latest bios, no startup items (except for anti-virus and my BT mouse)
3.5 minutes to get to log on screen 1.5 minutes from there until it's completely booted (HD slows, vista's "processing circle" goes away, cpu usage <8%)
it used to completely boot/load <1 min. No recent HW/SW changes.
suggestions? 8/15/2008 2:59:46 PM |

well it is a good option for my old laptop, but not my new one. And I have a few programs from work that I'd rather not lose and getting them back on my computer would be way too much of a hassle, thanks to the IT guy. And I'm not into the whole stealing software thing. 8/15/2008 3:13:51 PM |

I know this is for XP, but thought I'd post it anyways: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BootVis 8/15/2008 4:01:06 PM |

vista has built-in diagnostics for boot-timing. go into the performance and monitoring tools, and start tracking, restart, open the logs and see where it's lagging 8/15/2008 5:00:54 PM |

is there something similar to that for shutdown lag issues? 8/15/2008 5:10:56 PM |

well no shit....
figured it out. apparently it's trying to boot/load something from my external HD. I unplugged it and bam! boots/loads <1 min.
^^i just took a look at the boot logs. there's a bunch of errors/messages for booting problems. I'll keep a look out on them, but I'm thinking the ext HD thing may have been the cause of all the problems.
is there a way to figure out why and what my computer is trying to load from my external during boot?
and I just plugged my external back in, and something is constantly accessing my ext hd.... I just don't know what it is

readyboost? it shouldn't be - months ago, it said that the drive wasn't able to be used for readyboost, not that I wanted to.
i've tried checking to make sure, but I can't seem to find anything related to readyboost 8/15/2008 7:19:10 PM |

Look in your bios to see what your boot drive hierarchy is 8/15/2008 11:00:19 PM |
