8/19/2008 11:28:04 AM
the question is... did he make it to ozz.. Kite + hurricane seems more feasible than bike + tornado[Edited on August 19, 2008 at 11:29 AM. Reason : watched vid and  epic fail on ozz trip....]
8/19/2008 11:28:22 AM
damn. why didn't he let go after he hit the sand?
he was prob still strapped in and couldn't get to the release?
8/19/2008 11:31:36 AM
the question is not why didn't he pull the emergency release, it's why was he kite surfing in a hurricane?
8/19/2008 11:35:19 AM
oh, i didn't know you were strapped into that kind of thing. i thought you just held on
8/19/2008 11:35:46 AM

I'm no kitesurfer, but common sense says that steady winds are great and gusting winds will kill you. Maybe I'm missing something here. I hope the guy is alright though.[Edited on August 19, 2008 at 2:26 PM. Reason : l]
8/19/2008 2:26:28 PM
correct me if I'm wrong, but this storm hasn't been a hurricane for a while, if ever?
8/19/2008 2:29:28 PM

8/19/2008 2:42:07 PM
hahaha idiot
8/19/2008 2:43:57 PM
damn, that's crazy. QR needs to be better located I think...
8/19/2008 2:48:33 PM
Sometimes you just panic and hold on to the bar. Also it is not always as easy as just pulling the QR. When something like that happens there is very little, if any, time to react. I have been lofted/dragged but not near to the extent of the guy in the video. Thankfully my chicken loop came off my harness and the kite flagged out. Yes I was out on a too big kite on a too windy day and I am lucky not to be hurt worse, but after shit goes wrong just pulling the QR isn't always an option.
8/19/2008 2:59:07 PM
they should develop an airbag deployment system like that one commerical had years ago for construction workers (was a futuristic idea), but shit, if they made airbags for motorcycles... they can do this too..Or the gel landing system from the Final Fantasy movie
8/19/2008 3:10:41 PM
EXTREEEEME!
8/19/2008 3:14:20 PM
Or just don't fuck up, then you don't need a airbag/gel crash system
8/19/2008 3:23:56 PM
or just don't kite surf during a goddamn hurricane/tropical storm.

the problem there was a squall came through. had there been steady winds it isn't that dangerous being out on the right size kite. From what I understand he was on a 9m flat kite, top end would be around 35 knots. They had been out when the wind was in the upper teens before a squall came through pushing winds of 50+. You can see the other kiters trying to land. The guy didn't keep his kite low, once it headed up he went with it.
