so my little brother is coming to live with Ken and me for a while. He needs to be enrolled into Alexander Road Middle School. I was looking at their test scores online and they are meh. I know they are a heck of a lot better than where he is going now but I just have no idea what schools are like here. I know it has been a while since some of you Mecklenbergers have been in grade school but how was it? I was reading about some behavioral problems written by some of the parents of kids that go to this school. Granted there were only 4 or 5 responses about problems.

Can anyone help please?!!

Charlotte-Mech schools are horrible unless its private

My dad went to Mecklenburg schools back when busing took effect so he had some horror stories about that.

When my parents had me they moved to Union County because the school system is much better. Other than that i dunno what advice to tell you. Good Luck

West charlotte/west mech are terrible
Alexander just got a new building thats really effin nice... its in pretty good shap over all but i don't know about the teachers students etc... We're commissioning a whole bunch of new schools in Charlotte and that's one of the nicer ones. Part of it has been renovated too its pretty nice.

But the one i speak of is Alexander-graham middle school kinda on the south side of charlotte, i don't know exactly where yall are located.

OH NOES!! I think this would be kind of North West. We live in the North in Highland Park and our address sends him to this school with a Huntersville address. God I hate the middle school age with a passion!!!

I went to school in Char-Meck and feel no worse for wear, and I was bussed everywhere. In fourth grade I went to First Ward, in fifth grade to Oaklawn, and then sixth to eighth was at Spaugh Middle. All of them were quite ghetto but decent schools none the less.

Everyone complains about Charlotte Mecklenburg schools but its all about what the students and the parents make of it.

I was there.

Sterling Elementary for 6th grade
South Charlotte for 7th and 8th
Providence High School

I did well, and I turned out all right. I had no problems to speak of, and I'd say it's no better or worse than Wake County. I know I probably wouldn't want my children (when I have them) or siblings anywhere other than Wake or Char-Meck.

there's no room for teacher creativity and originality. everything is exactly by the books.

So you're in Highland Creek huh? Good luck fighting traffic from a hundred subdivisions on a rural 2-lane roads

are you talking about JM Alexander Middle School in Huntersville. I went there. It wasnt too bad when i went, prolly one of the better ones compared to like ranson middle. im not sure about it anymore because every year or so the school system reassigned the district lines directing which kid goes where according to where they live. The year after i finished high school they reassigned everyone and some of the school near uncc got a lot worse like Vance high school where I went, it basically turned into west charlotte high which was scary

it really depends on which school he's in.

but unless he's in the advanged, or AG classes, he's going to have to deal with a lot of behavioral problems in the class room

I loved Quail Hollow

I was right in the middle of the bully food chain there

I used to get my ass beat regularly by the bigger kids

then turn around beat the asses of kids who I was bigger than

and this was before Columbine, so they let us tussle for a while

Yeah, but it's not so bad. I mean, it's overpopulated, but being in the IB program at least gave it a smaller class feeling.

Anyway, Alexander is way better than some of the schools (like Ranson, which had nice gunshot holes in their front doors last I looked, etc) that are down in Charlotte proper. North Meck's overall test scores are average too, that doesn't really mean that every student who goes there is average by any means. It's not such a bad place.

Shit, I hate to double post

But if there's any way you can get him into the magnet school lottery (or however the fuck they do it now), and he's a smart kid, he should try to get into Davidson IB Middle. It's a really great school.

Of course, the open house was today... and he wouldnt've done the summer reading yet, so that might be more trouble than it's worth. Alexander isn't so bad anyhow.

thanks SF! Very helpful. I don't know if it would be possible to do the lottery thing. He is going to go to the new Mallard Creek High next year so he only has to go to this school for a year.
