My neighbor asked me to bring her futon to goodwill, but they won't take it without a mattress. It's lightweight, in good condition, you can probably buy a futon mattress at big lots or something. I'm off of Brooks Ave., PM for details.

also have a loft bed for free. Looks about the same as the futon. Assembly required.

think it'll fit in the back seat of a car or i'll need something bigger?

Maybe if you can pull down the back seat and run it through the trunk lengthwise of the car. There a few long pieces.
