I heard about it for a good while before it became real and was meh about it.Then i attended my first telepresence meeting, and was like OH FUCK THIS IS BADASS.I'd say it's as close to meeting with people live as it gets.

^^ Not that I really care why you posted that in such a way, but I'm not working by choice. I was a TA at State for five semesters while I was focusing primarily on my studies. Now, I'm a full-time graduate student--though I may become a TA again or GSSA in the future for the experience (I certainly wasn't in it for the money).I've structured my finances in such a way that I don't have to work right now. Please don't hate.

Telepresence is awesome, but it is still very cost prohibitive. Last I heard it was a around $300k per site for the most basic setup, but most companies were having to upgrade their core network and increase their bandwidth to support it. For a big corporation $1,000,000 to get two offices set up might not be a big deal, but two conference rooms with Telepresence isn't going to drastically change business either. It's not like everyone can use the Telepresence at the same time, so unless they have a lot of instances of it they are still going to be paying for a lot of travel. It will be nice when it becomes more cost effective.[Edited on August 25, 2008 at 10:19 AM. Reason : l]

^ Why do you hate the environment?
8/26/2008 7:03:10 AM
I love the environment. It's just a matter of letting the big companies purchase it and help drive the cost down so that it is affordable for the rest of the world. It'll be a good thing in the long run, but it is going to take some time.[Edited on August 26, 2008 at 10:58 AM. Reason : l]

I used to work at Cisco, so I got to see it shortly after it was released. We played with it a bit while in SJ and it was undoubtedly one of the neatest technologies I've ever used.
