But that man, who was wanted on numerous warrants, jumped out of a sixth floor hotel window. Law enforcement sources say the man broke an ankle in the fall and was captured moments later. Sources say he was wearing a ring with a swastika, and is thought to have ties to white supremacist organizations. A third man -- an associate of Gartrell and the hotel jumper was also arrested. He told authorities that the two men "planned to kill Barack Obama at his acceptance speech." That man, along with a woman, are also under arrest. The Secret Service, FBI, ATF and the joint terrorism task force are all investigating the alleged plot. The U.S. Attorney in Denver has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday afternoon. CBS4 will have new details on this developing story at 10pm."

Unfortunately, I don't think just being a meth-head would stop someone from being capable of doing something like this.

A good marksman with a good rifle could kill a man at 750 yards, no problem. I can hit a torso-sized target at 500 yards pretty consistantly (like probably 80% of the time)--using a box-stock, military issue M-16 or M-4 and iron peep sights, shooting from the prone.

Using my 7mm bolt-action hunting rifle, with its light, well adjusted trigger, 12x scope, a shooting rest, etc, I'm pretty sure I could hit a man at 750 yards fairly consistantly. A bulletproof vest would probably not stop the shot, either (unless it had something like the military's SAPI plates in it, which I seriously doubt any politician wears). It's not like I'm trained as a sniper or anything, either, or have any exotic weapon that you can't pick up at Wal-Mart or Dick's Sporting Goods (which is actually where I bought mine).
