didnt read the article 100% but they can take a class at NCSU at what cost. Tech's or State's ... im sure there is pretty big difference in the cost of a class at the 2 schools[Edited on August 26, 2008 at 9:04 AM. Reason : adf]
8/26/2008 9:03:58 AM
about 129$ at Wake tech and about $600 at NCSU.
8/26/2008 9:06:01 AM
^^ I guess they pay community college prices for community college courses and State prices for State courses. BTW, I didn't come up with the title for this thread--WRAL did.^ That's what I'm thinking. [Edited on August 26, 2008 at 9:09 AM. Reason : .]

^I know those are the prices, at least that's what I paid last year.Minus fees, I don't remember those.
8/26/2008 9:26:00 AM
is this a good thing or a bad thing?
8/26/2008 9:27:49 AM
Educational opportunities are generally viewed with a positive light.
8/26/2008 9:28:21 AM
oh ok...wasnt sure if i was supposed to be upset they'd let those people into ncsu
8/26/2008 9:28:53 AM
because ncsu is such an elite school
8/26/2008 9:33:37 AM
those people generally do better GPA wise than traditional 4 year students
8/26/2008 9:34:05 AM
Demand for services and space at State could increase somewhat, though. And I beg to differ on the "more educational opportunities" position that seemed to be put forth here: I think we need to allow fewer people into college, not more.

^^ I am in a one world-unity mood this morning. I feel the more educated people there are in the world, the more educated children will be in the future. I understand that maybe your POV is stemming from the possible dilution of a college degree and general degree inflation. I still remain adamant that knowledge should be shared and encouraged.[Edited on August 26, 2008 at 10:03 AM. Reason : arrows]

there will be plenty. look around.

You can take the student out of Wake Tech but you can't take Wake Tech out of the student.Or something like that.

8/26/2008 10:23:07 AM
professors aren't here to be good teachers, nor should they be.
8/26/2008 10:31:46 AM
Don't misunderstand--I am not putting down a community college education. Some here seem to be rather smug, but they actually have no idea what they're talking about. My point:

8/26/2008 10:37:46 AM
8/26/2008 10:46:36 AM
you'll hear that from me too. they're way more focused and serious. but there are quite a few who have giant tits and listen to metal and will screw anything walking because they want to piss off their parents
8/26/2008 10:49:21 AM
i know a lot of girls grow giant tits just so they can get back at their parents.

FDT or GTFO.Really dude, are you arguing that professors not need to possess the ability to teach? Just because you are expert in a field, but can't relate the information to others, doesn't mean you should become a teacher.
8/26/2008 11:56:24 AM
they didn't become teachers, they became professors.as a research university, if you fill your professor ranks w/ people based on their teaching merit, rather than their position in their field of study, you're fucked. that's not how major research universities work.that is, however, how community colleges work.
8/26/2008 11:59:30 AM
yea hes trying to argue that since ncsu is more of a research oriented institution, teaching becomes secondary
8/26/2008 12:03:53 PM
8/26/2008 12:05:26 PM
i don't think you can tell the difference between an nc state student and a wake tech student if both were walking around on campus, so..i can't see that this would make a negative impact on your daily life
8/26/2008 12:05:28 PM
1. Teaching and research are not mutually exclusive--nor should they be at an institute of higher learning. 2. I suggest that some of you read State's mission statement:
8/26/2008 12:09:12 PM
do you know how universities work? do you know where funding comes from? it's not from excellence in teaching.
8/26/2008 12:14:35 PM
how do you make more professors if the ones you have can't effectively teach them what they need to know? I agree with both of you I think
8/26/2008 12:19:18 PM
yea yea its easy to pull that shit out, but the fact of the matter is, that's just not the way it works
8/26/2008 12:19:38 PM
^^^ Do you? Obviously not.State has three primary objectives: teaching, research, and extension. All must be accomplished, whether one is more financially rewarding than the others or not. John and Jane Q. Public don't send little Suzy to State so that Professor Bumfuck can get his NIH money or State and he can make money off patents. Those parents send her here to be taught--preferably something useful--and to earn a college degree. Your position is like saying the meat in a cheeseburger is the most important part. Well, fine. But you must have the bread and the cheese and the condiments or you don't have a cheeseburger, understand?[Edited on August 26, 2008 at 12:27 PM. Reason : .]
8/26/2008 12:24:31 PM
Pretty sure if all a professor wanted to do was research, they could work at a private firm. I'm gonna have to agree that the university is here to teach and research.

How is this new? Anyone can enroll at NC State. I didn't qualify, but took one class there while I was still at Wake Tech. You need a 2.0 to enroll in distance education, or whatever they call that. A 3.0 always got you into NC State anyway as a transfer from Wake Tech. The NC State advisors explained it to me. There is a certain amount of seats each semester for true freshmen, transfer students, and intra-college transfer students for each major. I got into NC State as an ecology major, but transfered into CHASS as a history major since the GPA requirement was lower.

it's not like the professors DON'T teach. don't get crazy on me. they all make an effort to teach (well, some are research only), the extent of said effort varies. however, professors are not hired for their teaching ability. lecturers may be, but tenure track professors are not. and they shouldn't be. if you can't figure out what you need to know based on a lecture (not a fucking coloring session to make it interesting), asking questions at office hours and the recommended reading, then get the fuck out, you don't belong. as if that's not enough, there's also SI and multiple means of individual tutoring available.if you can't do it after all that, then you can't do it. if you need that awesome lecturer from wake tech to explain chemistry to you b/c an expert in the field flat out telling you what you need to know doesn't work for you, i don't know what to tell you.
8/26/2008 12:41:04 PM
^^I was a little under 3.0 thanks to Spanish, Stats, and philosophy. You can't get into CHASS unless you have a 3.0 GPA. Even if you have a 2.9, you will be denied. You need a 2.0 gpa to get into ecology in the college of natural resources. It takes a 2.0 gpa to get into history through an intra-college transfer after 15 hours at NC State as long as you have a B- in two 200 level history classes at State. I did way better than that. Once you get into a college at State then you can transfer to any other major in that college without having to meet any requirements. CHASS raised there GPA to 3.0 and they want to raise it even more, so students will quit using them as the door to the college of management and college of engineering, but the university won't let them. Most majors require you to still have a 3.0 after 15 hours to get in even after you are at State. As long as you have a 3.0 after 15 hours at State you can transfer into CHASS without having to meet any requirements. I think most other colleges work the same way. You can also enroll part time without being accepted and after 15 hours apply for full enrollment as long as you meet the requirements for the major you want. This is nothing new. People have been using these loop holes for years. You don't even have to take the SAT to get into NC State as long as you transfer from a community college.[Edited on August 26, 2008 at 12:48 PM.
