how long does it take ? I'm attempting to upgrade IOS on a router. I didn't have a switch available so I decided to use xmodem transfer and let it sit for awhile. it's been hours and i'm still at:
Quote : | "SUNY-NYC#copy xmodem flash Destination filename []? c2600-ix-mz.123-14.T7.bin Erase flash: before copying? [confirm] Erasing the flash filesystem will remove all files! Continue? [confirm] Erasing device... eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ...erased Erase of flash: complete Begin the Xmodem or Xmodem-1K transfer now... CCCCCCCCCC Starting xmodem transfer. Press Ctrl+C to cancel. Transferring c2600-ix-mz.123-14.T7.bin..." |
thanks.9/5/2008 12:00:46 AM |

xmodem can take 45 minutes up to a few hours if directly connected - pends on how large the IOS is.
It can also take overnight if you are doing it remotely... 9/5/2008 12:10:20 AM |

Its an experience thing, not a CCNA thing. 9/5/2008 12:58:28 AM |

the file is 10Meg. just trying to do this before i replace. this router didn't have enough flash mem. so i had to use a lower IOS. its been like 3 hours at least. i'm not going to interupt it. 9/5/2008 1:00:06 AM |

is this a 2600xm chassis? If so youre screwed.
I would say find another 2600 and partition the flash then load the IOS on to that but I forgot the 2600's have like 8mb of flash burned on to the MB and then a flash SIMM thats installed which expands the flash storage.
Yea, youre screwed either way.
You could have simply put the largest flash simm you had in that router, then used an IP base IOS which is much much smaller IIRC. Then once the smaller OS is loaded you can upgrade the IOS much faster than the entire xmodem process of the file you are currently working with.
This is IIRC that an IP base IOS is less than 10 meg, which Im almost positive it is.

you know that if you don't have a switch, you can use a crossover to connect your laptop directly to the router and use TFTP? 9/5/2008 9:21:28 AM |

^^ Dude xmodem is only used as a LAST resort...
Like putting a 2800 image on a 2600 router and completely fucking yourself.
You could have done what Bobby said as well as simply connected that 2600 to another 2600 and used the good 2600 as a tftp server to pull the IOS from ROMMON (assuming you could get in to ROMMON). 9/5/2008 10:52:49 AM |

i was multi-tasking at the same time and figured fck it i'll do xmodem and have it sit over night. i was using VPN to do some other sh!t on another network and doing the xmodem transfer at the same time. i figured the file was 10meg and it would be only 3-4 hours. 9/6/2008 11:11:30 AM |
