With the wealth of free and pirated software on the internet, paying for software has been a rarity for me. Of course, I don't mind buying software for my company, but paying my own money for software for myself personally just feels unnatural. Despite the fact that I currently make a living writing software. So what software have you opened your wallet for?

Several games - SimCity 2000 and 3000 back in the day, Civilization 2 and 4 (pirated 3) and I guess all the xbox360 and wii games I have
Split the cost of a Windows 2k upgrade license with my roommmate back in college
Been using EditPlus 2 for many years, am about to finally pay for a license for EditPlus 3

Xbox 360 games (I don't buy all that many, I'm more of a PC gamer)
PC games from companies I really want to support (Bioware, Bethesda, Creative Assembly, Relic, a few others)
Windows

Most of the rest of my non-game software is free anyway. open office for example

I can't say that I often pay for them, but I avoid using pirated copies of Operating Systems. They're generally not worth the trouble.

mozy (unlimited backup)
PC games
i did pay for Windows Home Server OS

that's about it. i've gotten all of my legal OS's from MS giveaways and such, including Office. the rest of the stuff i need there's good freeware alternatives for. if it's high-end software i usually get it free through some student/educational program (like Autodesk stuff), etc.

Newsleecher. And really I don't feel like it's the software I'm paying for there but the subscription to the supersearch service.

DLC for Rock Band.

um...this is hard.

I bought a copy of Braid on XBL Arcade. Does that count?

CoD4, Silent Hunter III, the HL/Portal/TF2 Steam games

and the $60 MS Office deal, though I'm starting to hate outlook and it's total shit IMAP implementation

some bands that I like enough to financially support

Games that are on steam(orange box, CSS/1.6,HL2,episodes,etc).

I recently paid for Poker Tracker Omaha. I'm guessing its hard to find niche software like this thats been hacked, plus stealing from an indie software company isn't very cool.

Windows XP Pro - Came with a bundle from Intel that I got working at Best Buy. It was $299 for like $800.00 worth of hardware AND the legit copy of Win XP.

Office 2007 Pro - Ultimate Steal Price $59.99

Both of those were retardedly good deals.

I do pay for my games (minus diablo II ). I mean, especially if its a good game or I have had fun playing sequels (C&C games / NFS Games, etc). I mean, paying for the games helps keep them in business so that they can designing/creating new games in the future. If I like them, I'll pay for a legal copy and "support" them to make more of what I enjoy. (poor Origin I wish they were still around...)

As for applications, I use Open Office (something like that) and try to find other programs that emulate or are simular to ones that I need. The last thing I didn't pay for was Maple 12, and that's because I have a friend that has it, but instead of borrowing his laptop every time I need it, he has temporarily loaned the program so I may complete my school work. My mom always said never let anything stand in the way of my education, especially money...

I'll uninstall it when I am done. I promise.

I think it funny that many of you are paying for software/services that enable you to more effectively steal software (and movies and music).
