A guy I know has a lil car trailer with "mobil home" axles- he wants me to help him rebuild it with some new bearings, etc. Agri-supply? The wheels are 14.5in. 9/12/2008 8:33:57 PM |

A couple of the wheel/tire assemblies need replacing, and the bearings in all 4 hubs need replacing. But these arent the typical axles, the wheels look like old dump truck wheels. I dont know what to call them.
I need to figure out if I can get parts for this easily or do I need to just replace both axles. 9/12/2008 10:46:45 PM |

it depends on exactly what kind they are, but usually they're not worth messing with. those axles are designed to get a mobile home from the lot to the trailer park and that's it. there are a few parts available for them, but not much. you might get lucky though. agri supply or northern are probably the only local places that would have anything. does either axle have brakes?
usually, they're not worth messing with unless you get lucky on finding all the parts for cheap or it's a brand like dexter that will accept a conventional hub. i would suggest this guy just sell the thing or put the money on new axles (one with brakes and one idler). 9/12/2008 11:55:12 PM |

IIRC it has brakes on on axle already. New axles would make it easier to get wheels/tires too. 9/13/2008 11:13:37 AM |

check the backing plates first. they're probably welded to the axle tube. if they're a 5 bolt pattern, you can just replace the entire hub/brake assembly with a conventional 12"x2" setup. you can buy the whole thing already put together, all you do is bolt it on.
if it's a 4 bolt pattern, you'll have to just source parts as you can for the existing stuff. you could cut off and fabricate a new backing plate, but by the time you do all that and buy the new assembly you might as well buy new axles.
goodyear should still make tires to fit those rims, but they're probably fairly expensive.
if you pull the bearings out, they should have a number on them that can be cross referenced at any bearing supply house. worst case you have to mic them and use those numbers. the only issue is whether they'll be a common application ($rhode island) or something oddball ($texas). 9/13/2008 4:21:17 PM |

he should be golden then. just buy a complete hub/brake assembly, normal wheels/tires, and roll. 9/13/2008 7:38:43 PM |

It has diamondplate sheetmetal on the sides (open center) that may need replacing. however he is thinking of just bolting some wood on top of it? I dunno, doubt 3/4 treated plywood is going to be much of an improvement. 9/13/2008 8:27:03 PM |
BigBlueRam All American 16852 Posts user info edit post |
yeah, plywood isn't going to cut it. you need something solid and pressure treated if you go that route. or, you could replace it with something cheap like expanded metal. or diamond plate again. certainly more than wood, but either one in a 4x8 sheet from dillon shouldn't be too bad. $150-200 maybe? i haven't priced any lately.
make sure the current flooring isn't part of the structural integrity before you go replacing it with something cheap though. if it's got mobile home axles, it could very well be a cut down mobile home frame. they're pretty flimsy without some sort of added re enforcement. the tongue and frame largely rely on the house itself for integrity. same with campers/travel trailers. 9/14/2008 1:21:41 AM |

12x2 electric brakes on one axle, needs replacing, have to see how worn out the drums are though.
look CAREFULLY and you can see the 5 bolt backing plate. YOU MAY HAVE TO SIDESCROOL

yeah, for real... i know ya'll got jungle skeeters that it probably eats, but that thing needs to die.
i was crawling under my car a few weeks ago and one of those bastards came dropping down on a line right for my face. i thought black widow at first with the black body/red spot, but i think it's one of those imitation species. i didn't hang around under there to find out though. 9/16/2008 8:01:28 PM |

about time someone noticed that bastard! when i pulled the brake drum off and it crawled from around an egg sack it scared the shit out of me. i usually burn shit like that, but i made this one die slow, with little doses of carb cleaner till he quit dancing. 9/16/2008 8:16:45 PM |
