I rafted down Crabtree Creek with Mr Grace, CrazyJ and some others. I had a couple open wounds, that I tried to bandage pretty well, that got soaked in the water. I'm still kickin.

Some of my friends say there are certain times during the year that you can dive in the Neuse and not worry about anything. Others say they'd never dive in the Neuse.
I'm one of the latter... Grew up in New Bern during the whole 'red tides' thing. Left a nasty impression in my mind about that river.
Then again I'm planning on diving in the Trent at some point for fossils, and the t ides throw the same water up into the Trent as the Neuse, if that makes sense. I was hoping to hit up the Meherrin this weekend but I'm bogged down with homework. 9/14/2008 12:46:25 PM |

those same hog farms, that in a recent 5 year period(cant remember the exact time frame) had 1/10 the discharges of waste that municipal water systems had?
Are those the hog farms you mean?
Sounds to me like I'd be more worried about the human waste being discharged at 10X the rate of hog farms. Maybe that's just me and my common sense.

if it gets bad enough they'll put up signs and you'll hear about it on the news
and the fish aren't killed by the fertilizers and/or hog shit
those pollutants cause an algae bloom that robs oxygen from the water and in turn kills the fish. it's the rotting fish after a fish kill that you wanna avoid, but you'll be able to see dead fish floating everywhere if that's the case.
the neuse catches a really bad rap. it's not that bad.

CharlesHF All American 5543 Posts user info edit post |
Most of those tend to be a bit beat up. With these, they've been sitting in the river for millions of years, no one has sen them since they've left the mouth of the shark. They're all kinds of different colors (depends on the kind of muck they're embedded in) and they're in good condition. Usually the stuff from Aurora is nice but tends to be chipped due to the fact that they normally go through machines before you get to look at them.
That, and the fact I love diving... The rivers around here offer interesting challenges. Low visibility due to tannic acid, stuff in the water, entanglement hazards, drunk boaters...but the rewards are pretty cool.
Just need to get the time away from classes to jump in. 9/14/2008 10:44:21 PM |

What's nice about the rivers is how long you can stay down. They're quite shallow (most in eastern NC are in the 10-20ft range or less) so you can stay down practically all day until you get tired/bored/cold/etc.
That and the fact that river diving is free...

Thanks for the injection of common sense.
Why is it that everyone gangs up on hog farmers like that? The poultry industry in NC is bigger than the hog industry and poultry waste has 3x the phosphorus as hog waste. I think I know which industry is not kosher.9/15/2008 8:40:02 AM |

The Neuse from New Bern down is perfectly fine. Swim, fish, ski, etc in it all you want. Years ago there were some issues, but I haven't heard of any illnesses from them.
The only places I'd be cautious of the Neuse range from West of Goldsboro - East of Kinston. 9/15/2008 9:00:00 AM |

Haven't gone down the Neuse, yet. My wife and I paddled the Mississippi River a few years ago, and I've paddled the Cape Fear river as well.

As far as the Neuse, I wouldn't worry too much once you get past New Bern, but that area between here and there can get pretty funky. I'd still swim in it, but I'm not that bright. I'm sure all the phosphorus and nitrates getting dumped into that river from multiple sources (suburburban lawns, hogs, etc) make it pretty funky in the summer.
There's some hypoxia stuff on our website if you want to check it out. Relates more to the Gulf of Mexico's Dead Zone, but the principles are the same.
The Neuse Riverkeepers would be the best folks to talk about water quality along the whole system.9/15/2008 5:03:35 PM |

NCDWQ Fish Kill reports
The river is naturally pretty nutrient high (just look at the production of our estuaries), and fish kills do sometimes occur naturally. Personally I wouldnt worry about swimming in it unless I saw dead fish because that would just be gross.
Actually NC has implemented a lot of new water quality monitoring and rules so the neuse is probably cleaner than it was a few years ago. Pretty sure State has done a lot of research that helped implement those rules [Edited on September 15, 2008 at 7:22 PM. Reason : linkage]
