Where do you guys go if you don't do your own? I'm leaning towards precision tune.

I need new spark plugs, plug wires, and a valve adjustment. I can do the first two myself. Where should I have the 3rd done?

I'm also aware that there are a bunch of kats here like Maximadrvr that are capable of doing the tune up, but I'd like to get a comprehensive diagnostic done while I'm at it, so I'm in the market for a shop.

^^i would get some feeler guages, take off the valve cover and check yourself to see if they are within spec. it should give the specs under the hood.

valve adj. isnt that bad though

Is it running bad? How many miles are on it?

you aren't telling us what your car needs. what's the mileage? what are you trying to get out of this "tune up"? what's wrong with it? you're better off throwing money into a fire than taking it to precision tune and telling them to do whatever it "needs"

65K miles (long daily commute)
some hesitation between shifting gears and accelerating when i've got 3+ passengers.

I'm sure it needs a set of wires based on the mileage alone.

Throw a set of plug wires and plugs in it. If you have never worked on a car it still cant take more than an hour.*4 or 6 cylinder?

That car is good to 100k without a tune up. You have a transmission problem, or you are carrying some really fat ass mofos around.

a comprehensive diagnostic doesn't [really] exist.

and more importantly, it sounds like you've already figured out what's wrong--take it to a tranny shop and let them tell you if that's the problem or not.

and wires? lol..this ain't the 60's

Wires @ 65k? Not unless they're arc'ing somewhere or corroded where they meet the plug.

I already have the factory service manual. I'd imagine that should suffice.
