Hey. I was wondering if any of you could tell me just how hard his tests are, and what should I study? From class and webassign, I have no idea where to even begin. His classes don't seem to have to do with any of the homework.

Thanks.

In order to be successful in Dr. Warren's class you should have a thorough understanding of the concepts used to solve the in class example problems and the webassigns (which he writes).

In class, you progressed through a series of examples which were closely linked to examples in the textbook and used a step-by-step approach to problem solving while learning the underlying concepts.
For homework (webassign), you developed your ability to solve problems using what you learned in class.

The exams are a combination of problems from in-class and webassign. Does this mean that he has literally "copy/pasted" from webassign? No. But I recall with certainty that no exam question was exceedingly "different" than either the homeworks or the in-class problems.

I scored an 90 or better (without a curve) on each exam and in order to prepare I did the following:
- Read the textbook before coming to class and outlined the example problems in the section
- Reviewed my notes for about 20-30 minutes each evening on lecture days
- Worked 2-5 problems daily (5 days a week) including webassigns, in-class examples, and end of chapter textbook problems.
- Completed the practice tests in a timed setting without using my notes (simulated the real exam) and corrected the problems I got wrong by writing out a step-by-step annotated solution.

In summary, I contributed about 4-6 hours a week in addition to lecture every week. I found that a lot of my peers who were scoring low on the exams were not reading the book, doing the homework correctly, and/or reviewing the in-class examples prior to taking the exams. Hope this helps! Good luck!

if you pay attention during lecture and put forth decent effort to completing your webassigns, you should not have disproportionate difficulty with dr. warren's exams. he tends to teach in the manner he is going to test--lecture, homework and exam problems tend to be very similar, though he might expect you to think just a wee bit deeper on exams. if you see him outside of lecture, he is generally more than happy to discuss problems and in semesters past, his TAs have done an exceptional job in SI.

I wanted to acknowledge Mcfluffle's comment about SI leaders: I have been very fortunate to have had excellent SI leaders. Thanks Elizabeth; Samia; Kelly; and now Alyssa - and Megan Early for running a fine program.

AAP provides an excellent study plan. Just to give credit, however, where it is due: Dr. Wertz wrote & coded most of the WA questions used. The lecture & exam questions - and those files that I emphasize - are my own wicked creations.

This reminded me of the user "A": he once posted a thread asking for $ purportedly in exchange for the answer keys for all of my WebAssigns. I posted in the same thread that I wanted half the proceeds or I would modify all of the assignments rendering his keys useless. Never worked out: so much for my Tuscan vacation. It was all a joke of course. For the record, though, I have no sense of humor at all regarding real academic integrity violations.

Syllogism proving GreatGazoo .NE. Warren:
The Great Gazoo is green;
Warren is the devil (reincarnated);
The devil, all agree, is red;
red .NE. green

Warren is the devil, he makes you sacrifice a fetus and eat it before you're even allowed to take the exam. Then you must kill your firstborn to submit the exam.

Good Luck

in my day, you had to bring back relics from the Holy Land, and memorize and sing the entire Iliad or Aeneid in the original Greek/Latin, depending on his mood that day.

I guess I am sadistic then, because I took Chem 1 with Warren and enjoyed it so much that I took Chem 2 with him as well. Though this was 5 years ago.

^ You're not the only sadistic one. I took 201 with Warren and promptly changed my major to chemistry because of him. Now I'm a chem grad student at GA Tech!

I hate chem (despite doing well in it). It seem that they taught you a rule that only worked 51% of the time, and tested you on the other 49%.

I don't see where there is a violation of academic integrity, the author of the thread wasn't asking for answers or old tests or anything.

btw, I had Warren for CH201 and although I found his teaching style fairly difficult, I was able to get through it with an A-. I don't know why people whine so much about how they think he is a bad professor, I have had far worse in other courses. Maybe it's just because CH101 was a really easy subject and CH201 was their first taste of real college coursework? I don't know, but I remember at the beginning of 201 the entire giant room of Dabney (can't remember the room number) was full, but after a month, only about 20 students ever showed up. Myself and 2 others were in a study group and we studied our asses off but we all got As in the class.

^I didn't. And wouldn't.

^^This isn't my first class that I've had to put a lot of effort into, I was just asking if anyone knew the best way to study for this test. I studied my ass off and still didn't do well. I think I need to form a study group like you did!

I don't know how people did so poorly on the test. Eight of the questions were exactly the same as the practice exam, the other two were changed up a little bit. I did all of the webassigns again and paid attention to how I did them and took the practice exam like a real test, which I actually got them all right B-\

I get the impression that this thread is largely populated by students who enjoyed Warren's course (though they may not distinctly admit it.) I personally enjoyed Dr. Warren's lectures. Had he taught other chemistry courses, I would have taken them.

As for phone ringing: I must admit, as one of your peers, I'm typically annoyed by cell phones interrupting the lecture. Not only is it a major distraction, but it shows disrespect and disregard for both your fellow students and your professor. If you choose to bring your phone to class, you should be responsible enough to silence it during lectures and particularly during exams.

That's why you turn it off before hand. Had him for CH 101 and it wasn't as bad as everyone said. If you didn't do well in his class, you're either a) lazy or b) don't belong in college. maybe a combination of both.
