Authorities charged Micah Hakeem Conley, 16, with assault inflicting serious injury and Stephen Shawn Wilson-Chism, 16, as an accessory after the fact. On Monday, authorities charged Tyree Lee, 17, with assault inflicting serious injury. "I am disappointed that it happened on the school grounds, because you assume that is where your kid will be safe,” Dave Merwitz said. DJ Merwitz said he is embarrassed and ashamed that he wasn't able to defend himself during the assault. His parents say they want something done about school violence so similar events do not happen again. "I want these kids who did this to my son to pay,” Dave Merwitz said. WRAL News talked with Lee's grandmother Tuesday evening. She said Lee claims he is the real victim and that Merwitz started the fight."

i'm not sure what you're getting at here.....
I seriously doubt the 3 kids, had they actually thought about it, thought that this was something they would simply get away with.

but anytime you have kids in the hall together, an environment exists that someone could get the crap beaten out of them. Sure, administration can take steps to reduce risk of violence or tensions or increase awareness of punishments, but it's not like he could have actually stopped the beating from taking place once the kids had decided they were going to do it.

I don't think that's possible. Racial/class tensions at Wakefield are out of control. In one of my SOC classes, four kids from the Wakefield neighborhood/school all agreed that they thought it was fine for black students to come to their school provided they took entrance exams in order to get in. The rest of the class audibly groaned at how ridiculous they sounded.

We gotta stop naming schools after golf course neighborhoods. It sends the wrong message. There are kids at Wakefield who believe it is their school and that other kids are undesirable intruders, and they identify these intruders largely by their race.

I mean, we just named a school HERITAGE after Heritage neighborhood in Wake Forest. WTF?!?!?

ummm. Not really. way to blame the kid that got his ass beat. Did he do something to provoke them? maybe. maybe not. But I am horribly offended by any notion that the kid had to have done something, much less that he "deserved it."

More than likely, the kid got good grades, and that was his crime. If the kid is Jewish, there could also be a *shocker!!!* racial aspect to it. I've heard a great deal of open anti-semitism from blacks where I grew up, far more than I ever heard openly uttered by whites. Hell, one of my best friends in middle school was about ten minutes away from being stabbed by a black girl, and as the SRO was dragging the bitch out, the dumb girl was yelling all kinds of racial slurs at the poor girl. Everyone was just sitting there going "wtf?"
