The deer had been shot and one had a cord around its neck that looked like the type of cord used for water skiing, Chapel Hill police spokesman Lt. Kevin Gunter said. The cord appeared to have been used to drag the animal. Moeser found the deer at the property line of his 501 N. Boundary St. home around 6 p.m. Friday night. They looked like they had been there a couple of days, Gunter said. "I have no idea," the lieutenant said when asked why someone might have dumped the carcasses. "It's just difficult to say. This is not something we deal with." According to a report in today's Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper, Moeser was upset at finding the deer and at the town for not coming to remove them. The town will not go onto private property but does remove deer and other dead animals if they are taken to the curb, according to a secretary in the town's public works department. It's not clear if the department had anyone available at that hour or whether Moeser was informed he would have to move the deer to the curb. "He said they were six to eight feet away," said secretary Erin Kawamata. Gunter said there were no reports on gunshots in the area so the deer probably were shot somewhere else and dumped in the neighborhood. Shooting deer is illegal now. The bow and arrow hunting season opened Sept. 13, and hunting with guns is currently prohibited. "
