Here's the deal, I bought the car off TWW actually..
I'll try to explain what happens the best that I can, so that hopefully someone can tell me whats going on, and thus i'll be more informed when going to the transmission shop. (I'd be able to tell them what to do instead of asking them whats wrong with it)
Alright. Its an Automatic 6 cylinder
I'm driving the car, its running fine... cruising along... when i reach a stop light.. I break normally... wait for green...... waiting for green... still waiting...... *Green! ok lets go.
So let off the brake and apply the gas pedal (nothing out of ordinary just running errands)
But something happened, when I pressed the gas again... the car "reved" and "reved" (RPM goes up and down as I apply the gas) yet I'm not moving... its as if its in neutral... but its not, its in Drive.
Now I sit here and about .05 - 3 seconds later something "Catches" and the car jerks forward a bit and begins driving regularly again as if nothing ever happened. I imagine if the car could talk it would say "Sorry I just "zoned out" for a second there"
this only happens when I come to a harder stop. what I mean by harder stop is like... when I brake late... as opposed to gradually slowing down while approaching the stop light.
Its as if something in the transmission is physically moving off the "clutchplate?" or (whatever's in an automatic) and revving the engine vibrates this mysterious part back into place causing it to catch and thus the car jerks forward (from the high RPM)
It also seems to happen much more frequently when its cold outside. because when its in the 90's (weather wise) it doesnt have this problem.
but its getting colder.. and this thing is happening at almost every stop.
SO.

check the fluid level and report back would be an initial thought 9/26/2008 4:09:18 PM |

Low fluid will definitely do what you're describing. It could just be a leaky gasket causing you to be low. Have you noticed reddish fluid underneath the car in your normal parking spot?
Smell the transmission fluid while you're checking it. Check for a distinct burnt oil smell.
I have heard people talk about "band adjustments" on automatic transmissions, but I don't really know how all that works. I don't know if that's what is needed here or if the transmission is just showing the first signs of being worn out. Slipping transmissions are usually a bad sign though.

The biggest problem is that it is a Chrysler product, and they are NOT known for their quality automatic trannies. 10/2/2008 12:05:09 PM |
