i dont know how many people i heard last night say "oh well the defense sucks because irving isn't playing, blah blah blah"
sure he could have helped, but not with our philosophy of "bend but don't break". We break far too much, i don't think i even remember a blitz from last night, granted they were running 4 and 5 wide sets where we had linebacker's covering slot wr's...
but honestly, i cannot stand how we play coverage 10 yards off every play and usf took advantage of it...we're afraid to get beat deep but i'd much rather try to shut down the 10 yard gains but playing bump and force the opponent to make a perfect through deep. Either way, we need to re-think the way we play defense, especially our coverage otherwise we're going to get picked apart the rest of the year. 9/28/2008 9:16:04 AM |

every team this year has thrown thosse quick out passes and screen type passes to the wr all day long. Its probably in everybodys scouting report by now. It was lethal when clemson did it. An adjustment must be made. 9/28/2008 11:33:30 AM |

it wasnt the screens and short outs last night, it was over the middle, constantly in the slot, and yes you cant cover 5 guys when he has all day but the play calls aren't working out either 9/28/2008 11:54:38 AM |

it's not like our defense has played poorly this year.
this was the first game that i was disappointed w/ our defense. south carolina they held out as long as they could, william and mary the second team let up some points- no big deal, clemson our defense did their best to keep us in it but we scored zero points on offense, ecu they played well with two huge goal line stands.

^we gave the up the 10 yards even when they were there. Willie Young has been bottled up the last few games. It seems like we should mix man-to-man defense in there a few times to just stop that quick, over-the-middle stuff and keep the QB guessing. 9/28/2008 12:44:16 PM |

^^Exactly
I gave up at the point when Jeremy Gray was 10 yards off of his man on a pass that was caught 30 yards down field. There's no fucking excuse for playing that far off, EVER.
I understand the consequence of playing man and getting burned, but at least you force the receivers to make a play to get open and you force the quarterback to throw a tougher pass. Every quarterback in america can throw a 15 yard pass to a man standing still with nobody within 10 yards of him....and we let one of the best in america do it to us last night....and didnt try something different. Un fucking believable. 9/28/2008 2:45:15 PM |

our defense had been great this year for the most part except for last night; irving not playing sure didn't help
but like an earlier poster said, you can't get them all. I like the quote from John Fox on his radio show in response to a caller asking him why the panthers couldn't stop the other team on third down. he said something like, "well, lets remember that the other team does practice too".
tough game but they do have a pretty good offense and our offense didn't exactly give them tons of rest time with long drives or anything. i would overall give our defense an A- so far this season. Forcing a lot of turnovers and have played some really good offenses and until last night hadn't given up all that many points 9/28/2008 3:14:23 PM |

^an f- lastnight. The offense only gave up 4 points. You can't allow a team to score 37 on you. The defense was downright atrocious. It was also pretty bad most of the ecu game. Poor tackling, giving up easy completions and not really shutting down the deep ball all while getting ran on pretty well. What exactly are they stopping? The d has looked bad in every game except william and mary and most of the d looking good is really just Irving making good plays and nothing dto do with coaching. After the usc game you guys said "well they were on the field the whole game" then after the clemson game you guys said "well clemson just has great playmakers" well those teams have been shutdown by other mediocre teams since playing us so I'm not buying it. ECU has only looked good in one game all season. Our game wasn't even one of their top 2 worst games offensively. Wilson just lead us through. 9/28/2008 3:21:42 PM |

we have been playing this same way all year, it's just last night someone was able to exploit it the entire game until it was over...we just occasionally had a blitz or made a good play on 3rd down but usf watched all the film and put together a great game plan for the offense based on the way we play on defense...there was nothing unexpected like it was said before, never kept them guessing...it was always line up 10 yards off and just sit back and hope to not break...
every team we play from now on knows the recipe to move the ball 9/28/2008 4:24:03 PM |

Matt Grothe is a great QB, but my grandmother would have looked great out there if she had as much time as he did in the pocket
Another thing that needs to be addressed: stop with f'n name chants at the end of the game. It is a curse!!! We chanted Daniel Evans after the FSU game 2 years ago---we lost 7 straight after that. We chanted Russel Wilson after the ECU game---he did not play in this game

With everyone healthy, our defenes could POTENTIALLY be an A-
But we're basically missing 2 safeties (walker and i'm including clem johnson), the best player on the team at LB, and our best DT...the last 2 making the biggest impact. Not to mention we experienced LB's in Thomas Barnes and John Ware and they're no longer with the team. thats 6 players, 3-4 of them being impact players for us.
But I don't care how good we can be, we were going to give up a million yards no matter what playing that soft ass zone last night against such a good qb. 9/28/2008 7:55:03 PM |

I'm not exactly sure if this is true or not, but it's hard to play man coverage on a rainy, sloppy field. When the offense knows where they're going, they have a definite advantage and don't have to worry about changing directions as much as DBs do. So, in those condition, I think a zone was more appropriate, although I don't know why they had to drop so far every time. Also, we never ran any screens (that I can remember) 9/28/2008 8:29:42 PM |

They were definitely giving the WR's too much cushion, but the rain had a lot to do with that. It's pretty damn easy to lose your footing when you don't know what the guy your covering is going to do.
With that being said, our cushion last night was ridiculous. As quick as Morgan is and as physical as Gray is, there is absolutely no reason we shouldn't challenge the WR's at the line more. Yeah we might get burned a few times, but it's a hell of a lot better than not even trying to stop the pass.
This is the first game this season I've been really pissed at Archer. 9/28/2008 8:47:32 PM |

^^this wasn't the first game we played 10 yards off, even if there was rain, we've done it all year...regardless of missing a few "key" players, you can't play defense like that 9/28/2008 8:50:09 PM |

All I'm really asking is that we dont just sit back in zone and let the QB pick us apart. The receivers weren't running routes. They were running straight to spots, stopping, turning around, catching a ball like they're tossing on the sidelines, turning, and running 10 more yards because theres nobody close to them.
The receivers have to cut on a wet field as well. At least force them to make a good play. Make the QB hit a moving target. Dont just sit there and take 10 yard passes up the ass and say "oh it will be over soon"
The fucked up thing is that ECU did the same damn thing to us with the WR swing passes. We let them do that all the way to the endzone multiple times. You do that with a good QB and its 7 points every time like you saw last night.9/28/2008 9:56:26 PM |

its nice, reALLY nice having an offense you can look over to the sideline and audible into a play thats perfect for the Defense and our D not being able to change
stop routes on zone and man to man they picked it apart too
its really nice 9/28/2008 10:04:14 PM |

People aren't complaining about the entire coaching staff. They're complaining because our D coordinator allowed USF to systematically pick us apart and didn't make any changes to try and stop it. We didn't have the horses to match up with USF -- that's a given. But Archer made it way too easy for them.
Really.

That's right. I forgot teams that play zone coverage completely forget how to play man-to-man. I mean, it really is a difficult concept to comprehend. You're assigned a man, and you actually have to cover him. That takes days ... months even to prepare for.
Here's the facts. Our defense was sucking ass last night because the WR's did whatever the fuck they wanted. If we're getting ass raped playing one scheme, don't you think that maybe ... just maybe you try something else?

That's true. But a huge part of their offense was Grothe taking three-step drops and firing to a wide open receiver who had sat down in the zone. Man-press coverage may or may not have slowed them down, but it couldn't have hurt to try.
