She meets the requirements to be a representative as held forth in the Constitution and by the bylaws of the US House of Representatives. Sure she's "qualified".

She's damn near the Sarah Palin of the left, but she's legally qualified.

I would consider someone like Cynthia McKinney to be the Sarah Palin of the left.

Cynthia McKinney is more the Renee Ellmers of the left.

Sarah Palin and Nancy Pelosi are both moderately savvy politicians when dealing with their fanatically supportive base, but simply do not comprehend how to deal with anyone who opposes them. Neither one is a complete idiot, but both are prone to asinine / borderline idioic statements from time to time.

Just m2c

it's fucking idiotic to equate pelosi's decades of experience with palin's tenure as media personality and disgraced ex-governor.

have you ever actually listened to palin talk to a reporter or the congress? she actually knows what in the hell she's talking about unlike palin.

i really find it staggering that one would compare the two. are they both polarizing figures? sure. but one is polarizing because she has accomplished more than any other female (and almost any other person period) in the congress and is liberal. and the other is polarizing because she's a fucking trainwreck and was almost VP and wants to be our next president.

Forget about Sarah Palin. The obvious comparison is Newt Gingrich. Newt, much like Pelosi, was a party loyalist and very effective at rallying the base. He served successfully as whip before taking over as Speaker during the '94 Republican revolution. By '97, he was personally unpopular, and there were rumblings of a power struggle behind the scenes. After a disappointing election in '98 (the Republicans lost 5 seats in the house, a far cry from the 60 seats the Dems lost 2 weeks ago), Newt stepped aside because although he had accomplished a lot as speaker, he was no longer the best leader of the House Republicans due to his negative approval ratings. His approval ratings at the time were around 45%, nearly double the 24% approval ratings that Pelosi currently enjoys. Pelosi would do well to learn from Newt and realize that she isn't bigger than the party. As it is, she is a slave to her ambitions and refuses to face the reality that she is hurting her own party.

Enough of the bullshit about how they hate her because she has been effective. Most people hate her because he has a cunt-like personality and leadership style that rubs many the wrong way, much like Newt's extremely unfavorable personal appeal and perceived petty politics (shutting down the Govt over a snub in Air Force One, anyone?). You can try to blame it on sexism all you want, but the hatred of Pelosi is no different from the hatred of Newt because he's a dweeb or Romney because he's slimy. There are plenty of effective and popular women in politics; Pelosi just isn't one of them.

What a fucking predictable retort. Her personality, in my honest opinion, could be best described as "cunt-like". I thought it was the most descriptive term. It has nothing to do with her being a woman in power and everything to do with her personality and how she presents herself. Bush is commonly referred to as a bastard, is that a sexist comment? I don't buy that "cunt" is a sexist term, but if it makes you feel better, I'll re-phrase to say that she has very little personal appeal to voters.

That's too easy. Just about all of them not named Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton.

Don't play the sexism card. It makes you look stupid. The fact is that Pelosi is a liberal who annoys the shit out of a lot of people, not just Republicans. She is wildly unpopular among independents, and lots of Dems don't like her either. Are they all sexist as well? Just because some sexists hate Pelosi doesn't do anything to change the fact that Pelosi is despised by a wide swathe of the population. If the Dems want to regain power in the House, she shouldn't be in any type of visible leadership role.

i don't know. but you sure fucking sound like it.

but back to the point at hand. . .

i think you have a much better comparison with newt gingrich. but one thing to remember with newt is that he didn't get nearly as much passed as he would have liked. and his partisan attacks on clinton backfired and likely helped to get him re-elected.

I have never heard Claire McCaskill, Dianne Feinstein, Mary Landrieu, Patty Murray or any of the other long-time Senate democrat women referred to as power-hungry bitches. Barbara Boxer probably suffers from sexism due to her radical liberalism and in-your-face legislative style. Meg Whitman and Sharron Angle were alternately referred to as whores and bitches... by liberal women. Maybe you could make the case that Jerry Brown's wife and Joy Behar are sexists...

why resort to sexism first when criticizing pelosi, then? people talk about her personality as if she's some repugnant person. i've seen very little evidence of that. is she tough politically? yes. but that's her damn job.

and this really gets to it. people use sexist attacks because they disagree with someone politically. i think that's lazy, sad and wrong.

Both of these points are true. However, I'd say that much like with Pelosi, a lot of Newt's agenda passed through the House only to get shot down in the Senate or the White House. There is no doubt that Pelosi's partisan leadership and hard-left agenda backfired and helped allow the Republicans to retake the house. Looking at the exit-polls, independents were disgusted with the amount of partisanship in Congress as well as the amount of spending going on. Most Republicans ran on repealing the healthcare bill and reducing spending. Pelosi, fairly or unfairly, symbolizes the big spending and shrill partisanship that voters hate. She should step aside and let the House Dems craft a new image.

I think that Boxer has brought some hatred on herself by correcting that General when he referred to her as "Ma'am", which he is taught to do. It was just a petty, stupid thing for her to do.

I have been trying to say for about 5 posts now that a lot of people hate Pelosi for her personality as well as her political views. Is it based on sexism? Maybe a little bit. Is it lazy, sad and wrong? Well, I don't know. Lots of politicians are despised. You seem to take it personally that people attack Pelosi with "sexist" terms. Fine, I'll keep those out of this thread. But politics is a dirty business, and personal attacks get thrown around all the time. Rightly or wrongly, people just don't like Pelosi. Much like a lot of people really despised Newt.

Kirsten Gillibrand. She's the one Reid referred to as the hottest woman in the Senate.

"Favorability ratings can sometimes differ quite a bit from polling firm to polling firm — but Ms. Pelosi’s poor numbers in the Quinnipiac poll were no anomaly. A CNN poll last week put her scores at 33 percent favorable against 52 percent unfavorable, and found that about half of Democrats would rather she be replaced. A poll for ABC News and the Washington Post conducted just before the election had Ms. Pelosi’s numbers at 29 percent favorable and 58 percent unfavorable.
In fact, Ms. Pelosi is among the least popular politicians in America today — perhaps the single least popular one that maintains an active political role.
(…)
The average score for Ms. Pelosi was 30 percent favorable and 55 percent unfavorable, giving her a net favorability rating of negative-25. This was the worst score of any politician in the study by some margin. Others with substantially net negative scores included Dick Cheney (-17), Harry Reid (-16), Sarah Palin (-14), Newt Gingrich (-10) and George W. Bush (-9; his numbers have improved some), but Ms. Pelosi’s scores were somewhat worse over all."

Guess this goes here. HOW DO I SOAP BOX

" FLASHBACK: When Asked Where the Constitution Authorizes Congress to Order Americans To Buy Health Insurance, Pelosi Says: 'Are You Serious?'
CNSNews.com originally published this story in which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dismissed the question of whether Obamacare was constitutional on Oct. 22, 2009.

(CNSNews.com) - When CNSNews.com asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday where the Constitution authorized Congress to order Americans to buy health insurance--a mandate included in both the House and Senate versions of the health care bill--Pelosi dismissed the question by saying: “Are you serious? Are you serious?”

Pelosi's press secretary later responded to written follow-up questions from CNSNews.com by emailing CNSNews.com a press release on the “Constitutionality of Health Insurance Reform,” that argues that Congress derives the authority to mandate that people purchase health insurance from its constitutional power to regulate interstate commerce.

Her press spokesman, Nadeam Elshami, then told CNSNews.com[...] that asking the speaker of the House where the Constitution authorized Congress to mandated that individual Americans buy health insurance as not a "serious question."

“You can put this on the record,” said Elshami. “That is not a serious question. That is not a serious question.”"
