Disclaimer: This is something tiny, and like many things blown out of proportion, is about principle.

I went to Wal-Mart tonight (I really didn't want to, but also couldn't avoid - I needed to get kitty litter tonight).

On the way out, with two bags on my wrist, and kitty litter in my other hand, the 'greeter' asked to see my receipt. I politely told her 'no, thanks'. I guess she's not used to this, because she started to get agitated, and told me she MUST see my receipt, for the kitty litter. I told her she didn't, and she asked one more time. I just walked out without saying anything. Some other employee who had been nearby ran and I heard a code being called on the intercom, and then he followed me out of the store. He didn't try to stop me

I'll show my receipt when I damn well want to, or have agreed to do so as a condition of shopping at a store (e.g., costco, BJs, and the like).

also a good thing to note is that they are not allowed to charge a minimum for credit card usage like gas stations like to do

they pull that shit and i start dialing the 800 number on the back of my credit card and they usually go "ok ok, ill do it this once"

i dont really have the time to report them all but if i had to be a repeat customer i probably would

Couple people tried to do their jobs. You made their day rougher. End of story. Point?

no. you're right.

it couldnt be that giving me a receipt and then 10 ft later asking me for proof that i paid is pretty redundant and unnecessary. those people that were just doing their jobs...are being paid to do a job that shouldn't exist. loss prevention happens with an emphasis on your own workers believe it or not.

i hope you know that wal mart and sams club are owned by the same franchise.

it would have been less trouble for you to have put bag down show greeter and carried on. i know that it does suck that the other people have to steal and this is why they do that

Do the sensor things not pick up things like kitty litter???

If they do why do they need to see a receipt?

No one was in the wrong. Something was, and that's the corporate entity of Walmart.

Too bad an elderly lady got stuck enforcing an invasive, asinine policy.

Sure, I made their day rougher. For about fifteen seconds. Anything more than that would have been of their own volition (i.e., if they had elected to pursue the matter, or prolong the interaction).

My point?
I made it at the end: one of many reasons I avoid shopping at walmart (and best buy, and other retailers who treat their customers like shit and/or have terrible business practices)

Quote :

I do. And I don't shop there

Quote :
"it would have been less trouble for you to have put bag down show greeter and carried on."

Uhm...how would it have been less trouble?
I stopped in my tracks for just a few seconds. This opposed to putting down the kitty litter and digging out my receipt. I didn't object because I had full hands.

I think they do the sensor stuff for more expensive items or commonly stolen items. It'd be pretty expensive to label every single thing in the store, you know?

invasive, sure

but it's hardly asinine when you look at a store's inventory shrink reports.

it's a solid practices that reduced both operational and external shrink.

but thats the stores problem. not yours. theyve decided theyd rather pay someone 7.50/hr to stand at the door with a marker and an UNENFORCEABLE policy than pay for an efficient loss prevention team. research shows that interacting with customers and having suits on the floor is so much more effective at lowering your loss. but walmart is a soulless faceless corporation so it doesnt surprise me that theyve taken this route.

How much does receipt checking actually reduce shrink? I'd guess not as much as they make it sound

Pretty much.

Instead of doing your loss-prevention at the last point of contact with the customer, how about you ramp up the in-store efforts? Two birds with one stone: more effective, and you don't alienate all of your customers with one policy.

i want to go shopping and now i cant go on with my business without being hassled at the door cause some poor ghetto fuck has to steal shit

right. so you agree that the company should be focusing on the bad apples instead of punishing everyone.

im sure walmart and best buy have determined that this is the cheapest way to keep loss down to an acceptable level while walking a fine line with legalities. they cant pursue you outside of the store should you decide to not show them the receipt, even if you did just steal it. the course of action is the same as if someone wasnt at the door and you just ran as fast as you could out of the store. they call the police to do their job and they are the only ones who should be doing it.

Group Punishment

One of the group homes I lived in when I was younger subscribed to that theory. They also viewed low self-esteem as a discipline problem that could be rectified with punitive exercise and housekeeping.
