OK so GTA IV was in my xbox 360 when it got bumped and fell, the cd has a circular scratch about 1/3 the way around the disk...I put the disk back in and try to start it and nothing happens, just a black screen and no loading or anything
my first attempt was to use toothpaste and work it into the scratch in the cd to get it to work (don't ask why, just heard it worked) so after the toothpaste trick I put it in and it starts to run through the intro screen...as soon as it gets to the girl with her tits hanging out looking in the car (you know what i'm talking bout if you've played it) it won't load any part of the actual game and gives me the "unreadable disk" error...
any help would be much appreciated so I don't have a $60 coaster!! 10/1/2008 1:02:17 AM |

Something very similar happened with my Forza 2 disc- I moved the Xbox one day while it was on and it was cool. Went to play the game again and it wont load. Memorex makes something called an optifix that I bought years ago to fix some scratched up CDs. It didnt work wonders back then, but I was able to fix the Forza disc to the point where it loads and plays perfect now.

There is a little video store in my hometown (not big enough for the big chain stores) that has a special machine that fixes scratches. I had a copy of Silent Hill 2 that had a fairly deep scratch (about middle of disc ~90deg) and it fixed that when all the tricks and cd repair kits couldn't. They only charge like $3 to do it. I would imagine Blockbuster or similar place would have something similar to this to repair their dvds/games. 10/1/2008 9:46:06 AM |

^What he said (Brewer's FTW!)
I'm surprised the toothpaste didn't get it going completely. My roommate had the same thing happen to one of his games, he was reluctant to try it, but it worked. 10/1/2008 9:52:16 AM |

Don't they usually put stickers on their rental discs?

so I admit I was having a bit of an ethical issue with the blockbuster thing...I ended up finding this # for game dynamics in the coffee news and took it over there...
The guy behind the desk was a little toooo geek, but who am I to complain? I'm on the wolfwebs....
He had some contraption that apparently resurfaced my cd and he fixed a controller for me while I was there that I had trouble with...didn't charge me anything at all...
I guess the moral of the story is: do the right thing!! ...then if that doesn't work screw over a big corporation!! only in that order...the economy is hurting enough as it is 10/2/2008 6:55:13 PM |

yussir...booted GTAIV the other day it worked fine...absolutely no problems!!
and he also mods xbox's and controllers...he had this one mod for an xbox controller called "smooth as silk" kinda gay name, but damn it felt amazing...not sure it's worth the $40 to make the controller feel any better, but if thats your thing... 10/3/2008 1:14:37 PM |

Nice, you got it fixed. Just be careful because IIRC there is a limited number of times that they can resurface it without wiping out the data. Then you might have to do something "unethical." 10/3/2008 1:21:58 PM |

^ thanks, yeah I'll have to watch that...and just FYI the guy at dynamic games said that since I was the second guy that day to ask him if he had a "cd scratch fix" he had actually just ordered a new system for $200 that is supposed to really do a number on scratches both minor and deep... 10/3/2008 3:04:10 PM |
