I would sell maps of downtown Thurmond to tourists on the trains. They would unfold it to find it only has 3 buildings on it, one of which is my map shop. No returns bitch

So how much could we reasonably pay for this town? Is there highspeed internet available there? How about Amtrak? Is an airport nearish by?

I wanna own a town.

Amtrak - yes, right in town, on the Cardinal/Hoosier lines (NYC - DC - Cinci - Chicago). Nearest airport is Beckley (BKW) but not much flies in there, better luck in Charleston (CRW).

High-speed internet is highly unlikely, but you never know. Thurmond is actually in a good spot for rafting tourism but you'd need to add some roads.

Passed through on Saturday. I was the only person in town - or so I thought. I heard voices in the hills, and saw two cars drive out from the gravel roads that lead up to the houses in the hills.

Not back in the day. It was a major hub and maintanance shop for the C&O. Trains were always going through town back then, and lots of changing trains was done by the passengers. Might not have been Grand Central or Union Station (DC), but it saw a lot of (coal) traffic. When the trains switched over to diesel, the place wasn't needed as much.

And yes, I was the only tourist in town.

Holy shit

cbob, you did well.

Depending on the route and time of next year's road trip, the fiancee and I might wander through upper appalachia, and see more places like this.

WV is a beautiful state.

Beckley has a strip joint, Southern Xposure, that is surprisingly not terrible.

There is no might. You must wander through Upper Appalachia.
