There are acoustic electric basses, but most of them aren't loud enough to play unpugged and be heard. I use a battery powered Pignose when I want to jam with other guitars ( http://www.samedaymusic.com/product--PIG7300 ).

Interestingly, the Ovation Celebrity bass (model CC2474) costs about $400 new (with free shipping).
