I want to put a license plate bracket on a fiberglass bumper cover, where there aren't any pre-drilled holes. Would self-tapping screws have enough gripping power to hold the bracket on at highway speeds? Using a nut would require removing the cover, which is a pain I'd rather avoid.

i'd be more worried about it cracking the fiberglass than anything else

Fuck all that self-tapping shit. If I were you, I'd drill holes a little oversize and put a thread insert in there. Like a flanged thread insert or whatever with a dab of 5 minute epoxy.

Or you could be all ghetto and shit and use drywall inserts.

I already tried some double-sided tape but it didn't stick well to the aluminum plate. This is a european plate that will go below the NC plate on the back because I'm pretentious like that.

^yeah, seriously. Mostly in homage to my British heritage. I realize it's an American car, but my anglophilia doesn't get in the way of common sense. I won't own a British car until I can afford to throw money away on something that's in the shop more than it's on the road.
