This website is kinda crappy, but has lots of decent stuff. Scroll down until you see PATC 727 to 518 conversion kit, with a yellow picture about 1/4 of the way down the page. I don't know for a fact, but i think that is what joey was talking about/ 10/14/2008 3:21:44 PM |

lol, yeah, even i definitely wouldn't chance pulling all of that with the suburban. maybe around town in a pinch, but not for 3 hours on the highway. i was just saying for at least getting the dodge and my trailer back up here since i'm going down there anyway. then, matt could use it to take his parent's car back and get his jeep whenever he wants.
i highly doubt the trailer/jeep/dodge would even be 16k though, i'd bet closer to 17k. i've had 14-15k behind it a number of times even through the mountains, but that's still pushing it. power is excellent and braking is adequate, it's the suspension that becomes sketchy. i've been extremely impressed with the 454, and the 4l80e is one of the best performing autos i've ever towed with. especially considering it's all got 240k miles on it.
the toter doesn't have insurance on it at the moment. i took it off a while back since i knew it wasn't going to be getting used for a while. i could put it back on if you want to use it though, just takes a phone call. getting some use definitely wouldn't hurt it either.
i've got another possible idea too. i can use my dad's truck unless he needs it for something. it'll pull everything and then some no problem. i'll get up with him and see.

^^yeah, i'm definitely still planning to replace the suburban with your ram. this latest shit with my leg has just put another kink in my plans, i'm back to no manuals for 2-3 weeks. plus, i really need to sell the suburban or the jeep first. not only for the physical room, but now for the $$ too. i was just going to go ahead and grab it with some of my "for indulgences" savings, but the market has kicked me square in the nuts across the board. so, i've got to kind of sit on that for the time being so i don't take a hit on it. probably should start funneling it into my long term stuff to take some extra advantage of the low prices...
Quote : | "16k lb load on a 3/4 ton sub? I don't think so. Well, I wouldn't do it, but i'm not Ivan. Is the super duty gone?" |
nah, i've still got it. it's just strictly my work/company truck now though. i've been nursing the 4r100 along for more than a year. it's fine for normal driving, but put a load behind it or dip into full boost and it goes to slipping. a load like the one in question would definitely be the end. plus, i'm going to sell it soon and that will go a lot better with it still working, even poorly. i'm hardly interested in a $2-3k rebuild that i won't get back. i'd rather just discount the price some. it makes more sense to get something newer and more economical for work duties and have a seperate cheap dedicated tow rig to beat on otherwise. the savings in operational costs alone on a 1/2 ton gasser vs. a 1 ton diesel are substantial. i've been tracking the real life differences for a while now since we have both types of trucks in the company. not to mention things like if i break something towing on a weekend 4 wheeling trip, or on a week night to the track, etc. there's no worry or hassle of being without the truck/tools/equipment during the work week.

any opinions on a rebuild kit? I can get a pro-king through work cheap. Is there any quality difference at all?
so tranny build list that I'm thinking so far:
rebuild kit shift kit - transpak (transgo) most likely a torque convertor - opinions? (hughes, suncoast, goerend, etc.) overdrive kit from hurley's site - anyone heard anything about that at all? 10/16/2008 12:16:07 AM |

I've heard rave reviews about suncoast and goerend
reverse manual valve body 10/16/2008 8:01:24 AM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
Dude...one of the beauties of the automatic is not having to shift. Can't do that with a reverse manual. For drag racing only!
Matt...about the OD kit...that's just to plumb the A518 to be able to shift into OD automatically. The 727 as it sits, even with that kit, has no overdrive potential. The biggest debate among the OD conversion from A727 bunch is how to accomplish an auto OD shift, as the powertrain module has this task on auto OD trucks.
Bottom line...you still have to have the A518 to swap in to get OD.
Suncoast does indeed have a good converter, but remember, when you have the A518 or the 727, you'll have to use a non-lockup converter, as neither has the hollow ported pump shaft or the valve body to actuate a lockup converter. All that said, it's still a good idea to go with an aftermarket converter with a better stall speed/stator-rotor tune because the stock one does lose too much power.
I really think that the truck would do better with 3.54 rear gears. Now catch number 3 comes into play here...what's under that truck isn't a Dana 70. It's a Dana 71. The basic difference is in the carrier, which is designed for the 3.07 gears and sized accordingly. So it's not a straight swap...unless you want to go with a different carrier. First thing that popped into my mind was Detroit Locker...BUT...the DL available for the 70/71 is a carrier insert; uses the stock carrier. 10/16/2008 8:51:57 AM |

"for drag racing only"
hence the
so what's the difference b/t the 47rh and the A518 then? 10/16/2008 8:59:38 AM |
zxappeal All American 26824 Posts user info edit post |
47RH, better known as the A618, has lockup converter capability. Built for the diesel only I think. That and V10 trucks.
The A518 (46RH), I believe, does come in lockup form for the lesser engines (like the 318, 360, etc.) 10/16/2008 9:04:57 AM |
