http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/diet.fitness/10/14/healthmag.alcohol.brain.shrinkage/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

Quote :
" Overall, the more alcohol consumed, the smaller the brain volume, with abstainers having a higher brain volume than former drinkers, light drinkers (one to seven drinks per week), moderate drinkers (eight to 14 drinks per week), and heavy drinkers (14 or more drinks per week).

Men were more likely to be heavy drinkers than women. But the link between brain volume and alcohol wasn't as strong in men. For men, only those who were heavy drinkers had a smaller brain volume than those who consumed little or no alcohol.

In women, even moderate drinkers had a smaller brain volume than abstainers or former drinkers.

Buffalo theory

Quote :
" A herd of buffalo can move only as fast as the slowest buffalo. When the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members.

In much the same way the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers. "

this isn't true, Walls. you use your entire brain. Do you really think you'd be fine if a doctor removed 70% of your brain?

Lighter brain = Advantage.

A big fat brain will only slow you down. With a large brain you might see a lion and think "Hmmm, I wonder why there is a lion in the streets of Raleigh." Then you start brainstorming about the locality of zoos, whether or not the circus is in town, whether a person is legally allowed to own a lion in the city limits, etc. Meanwhile, that lion is about to eat you and your big tasty brain.

With a small brain you're going to see a lion and be like "OH SHIT, A LION!!! I'M OUT!!!!" You'll also be able to move more quickly and with more agility without all that top heavy weight slowing you down.

Quality over quantity.
Smaller = more efficient.
Lighter is better.

i've seen alcohol induced brain atrophy actually "save" a few lives from intracranial hemorrhages(not ruptured aneurysms, but hypertensive bleeds)

it gives their brain just enough room to swell without killing them, but it could still swell enough to cause devastating neurological damage.

of course drinking like a fish fucks with your liver, which makes your clotting times shitty. So if you do have a hypertensive bleed its gonna be a huge bleed.

so instead of dying you get to go live in the nursing home and stare at nothing in particular.
