i've been out of the technology scene for awhile but i got a bday coming up for someone special i'm deciding between a digital picture frame or gps...need to buy this weekend
putting cost aside, what should i get?
digital picture frame - how's the technology? - any recommendations on frame size/brand? - any good deals out there now?
gps - any recommendations on brand/model? - any good deals out there now?
Thanks! 10/15/2008 1:44:31 PM |

I'd go with the GPS, which is way more useful.
I bought my boyfriend a digital picture frame last year for when he was out of the country and I don't think he used it at all.] 10/15/2008 1:48:08 PM |

we bought a tom tom initially. it had way fewer POIs, more messed up/incorrect/old street names (even after updating), and the overall look of the thing was kinda crappy/old looking. i took it back and traded it for the garmin. i'm very very happy with it. 10/15/2008 2:19:24 PM |

if it's for a guy, digital picture frames are stupid.
GPS - make it a garmin nuvi.
the sams club deal is a good one. 10/15/2008 2:58:07 PM |

so the garmin nuvi 750 for $300 at sam's seals the deal? is that one of the lowest prices we've seen for that model? i happen to have a sams club card too! 10/15/2008 3:25:36 PM |

Yeah. I go the 650 last year. It's great but the 750 actually reads out the road names plus I believe it has bluetooth. 10/15/2008 3:28:59 PM |

just to tilt the conversation a litte, what's a good brand/model for digital picture frame? i hear a lot of no name ones out there and some brand name ones...what's good in terms of reliability 10/15/2008 3:31:35 PM |

If this SOS is a male, why in the hell would you think they'd care about a digital picture frame over a GPS?
Unless they already have a GPS, this is a no-brainer.
And i've never seen a digital picture frame that was worth its cost (by this, I mean they never look anything like an actual photograph).
For digital picture frames, get the most expensive one you can find, really. They'll have better viewing angles and a higher resolution, as well as faster processors (so the transitions are smooth, and don't give you a seizure). 10/15/2008 3:42:15 PM |

^^^ according to amazon, the 650 also has text to speech.....the table comparing garmin models seems to indicate only difference between 650 and 750 is something called "MSN-enhanced (with optional receiver)"

^ most GPSes have text to speech.
The MSN enhanced thing probably means it connects to the internet to get live-traffic updates and things like that (this is a wild guess, so consult google).
Which means there's likely a monthly fee associated with it. 10/15/2008 3:49:47 PM |

dude seriously?
RTFM. it's on standard. if you are in an underdeveloped area at the time of the map creation, then it might not have names. before i updated my maps, the area around 540 had state designations and not the road names they have now.

not to insult, but who in their right mind would pay for that. the other services like live traffic monitoring (useless here in NC) and news reports are nifty in larger cities. voice recognition is crap.
