i don't wake up in the middle of the night with baked boogers and a super dry throat

"baked boogers and a super dry throat" sounds like the name of a Disney Channel band/song.
10/20/2008 12:04:42 PM
banging on a trash can

as long as you have a humidifier, it doesnt matter
10/20/2008 12:12:17 PM
One of the few benefits of using a CPAP machine is that I am hooked up to my own personal heated humidifier all night long.

A gas stove is clearly superior to an electric one. Heat, I am not sure.
10/20/2008 12:23:05 PM
gas heat warms the air, as opposed to baking it
10/20/2008 1:35:16 PM
I rather just bundle up and have no heat on, which is what I do.
10/20/2008 1:37:10 PM
i, too, have gas heat.
10/20/2008 1:40:34 PM
agreed. I cranked mine up for the first time last night because I accidentally left my windows open and didn't get home until midnight. Took my house from 45 degrees to a toasty 70 in like 30 minutes.

^^^if i do that at night, i slip into hibernate mode and don't wake up after AT LEAST 10 hours[Edited on October 20, 2008 at 1:42 PM. Reason : arrow'd]

i love sleeping with it cold as shit, it's just waking up and getting out of bed the next morning that sucks. and getting out of the shower sucks even more.
10/20/2008 1:49:39 PM
the thing i hate about gas heat is that April - October i pay $10 a month just to have a gas connection when i use 0 gas. i think when it comes time to replace my stove i'll get gas burners. maybe even pipe natural gas to my grill outside.
10/20/2008 1:50:28 PM
You should get a gas water heater too. If the power goes out you can still take hot showers.
10/20/2008 1:53:54 PM
yes.mine is off during the day, all windows unshaded.at night, it's on minimum of 74 (for the kid). it gets bumped up to 78 in the morning so that the shower isn't cold as shit, then back down when i'm heading out.i love programmable thermostats.

yeah the house i lived in in college had a gas water heater. during one of those ice storms where people were without power for a week we had nice warm showers. i'll wait til my water heater asplodes to replace it but may as well run the gas line to it at the same time as i replace <first-broken-appliance/>[Edited on October 20, 2008 at 1:57 PM. Gas water heaters, in my experience, heat up a lot quicker and get hotter as well. I had about 6 people over here a couple weekends ago, all taking showers back to back, and the hot water never ran out.

newer heat pumps are good down to around -30°F i'd like to see how well they work
10/20/2008 3:39:20 PM
Heat pump does not equal electric resistance heat..Heat pumps suck in winter...ERH = Gas in response time etc but makes for $tx electric bills[Edited on October 20, 2008 at 3:45 PM. Reason : .]
10/20/2008 3:44:46 PM
the heat pump i have has been pretty awesome.

10/20/2008 3:47:47 PM
slap tit....i promise you those heat pumps have electric resistance heating coils to assist them heat pumps are about as efficient as eating rice with toothpicks when its cold out.

When I build my house it'll have a geothermal exchange and probably a couple of wood burning stoves or fireplaces.[Edited on October 20, 2008 at 3:57 PM. Reason : adfasdf]

^ make sure its done right... you can heat soak the ground if the climate isn't right for it..(basically you need to be heating as much as you're cooling in a year otherwise in 5,10,20 years the ground temp will rise enough to render your system in-effective.

^^ Well, I plan on building somewhere in the midwest or northwest so I imagine I will be heating considerable portions of the time.
