If I am not mistaken, traffic laws are state laws and do not vary from county to county.

Passing a stopped school bus is a misdemeanor punishable with five driver's license points and fines up to $200, but I assume it is different for turning in front of one that has yet to stop.

I talked with the driver and apologized. He said I'll let you go though, now in my mind I m thinking did he say that because there were cars behind him or he's letting it slide. I honestly didn't do it intentionally and not knowing penalties in NC isn't helping either. I looked on DMV site but can't find info.

actually, I'm wrong. The driver can report you and have you prosecuted if he got your license plate number and a description. But if the bus wasn't stopped, i.e. the stop arm wasn't out, you should be ok

I think bus driver got my plate number and I talked with him for a min so he knows what I look like. Can he get me a ticket? I just don't want to go to jail for some silly like this. Kids were not even getting off or the stop sign.

I've talked to school bus drivers before. It's extremely hard to prosecute people for this, unless they are caught red handed by the cops. The whole proving who was driving thing and such. It sucks because apparently there are a lot of assholes out there that give two shits about injuring children.

At least you are one of the considerate ones. I wouldn't worry about it.

If the little stop sign was not out...then its no harm no foul. I am assuming you were in front of the bus based on him getting your plate #? If so then don't sweat it the law states that you have to stop if your behind the bus or if your on a two lane road coming towards the bus.

I don't understand how there's a problem to turn left up the street somewhere in front of a stopped school bus even if there were a sign out on it. I thought that stop sign was designed to prevent people from driving by the school bus while it is stopped so that you don't hit kids who are dumb enough to run around the front or rear of the bus.

I stopped my car after he honked, got out and walked to the bus and he said "you were supposed to stop there I'll let you go though". Now I don't know if he meant I m off the hook or is he going to turn my plate number in. Hopefully he wont or I'll be fucked by my insurance company with 5 points. I never even gotten a warning for speeding before my record is clean but this might fuck it up

I m screwed

A cop came by my apartment and gave me a ticket. I don't know what to do here because I am new to the area. I really can't afford 5 points on my insurance and someone said my insurace will go up 70% which I can't really afford currently.

He said I made a right turn to go into my apartment complex when the bus stopped. Soon as I made the turn his STOP sign came out.

(d) It shall be unlawful for any school bus driver to stop and receive or discharge passengers or for any principal or superintendent of any school, routing a school bus, to authorize the driver of any school bus to stop and receive or discharge passengers upon any roadway described by subsection (c) of this section where passengers would be required to cross the roadway to reach their destination or to board the bus; provided, that passengers may be discharged or received at points where pedestrians and vehicular traffic are controlled by adequate stop-and-go traffic signals. (e) Except as provided in subsection (g) of this section, any person violating this section shall be guilty of a Class 1 misdemeanor. Well I got the ticket now and I m screwed. This month just sucks for me a lot of bad luck. Just don't know if I should get mad now or what. Out of the blue now this happened and my insurance will go up. I didn't even get a speeding ticket before.

I don't have a scanner but I will scan it by Wednesday at work. Got meetings all day monday, tuesday. Now I m looking into any good lawyer who can save me from 5 points on my insurance. If my insurance go up, it will screw my whole budget. Asking parents for money is not my thing anymore.

right. you'll sign a waiver, pay him, he'll take care of it for you. as far as court costs go, some of them include that in what they charge you and some make you deal with it separately--either way, they will let you know what to do.
