for infants and toddler?Went to a mall today to price baby items. Stumbled upon a store that sells haute couture for infants, toddlers, and older children. I saw the following brand names:BurberryD&GChristian DiorMoschinoGucciPradaChanelYSLetc.I was curious, so I looked at some infant and toddler shoes and clothes to see how much they cost. I had the shock of my life:Shoes/sandals: $200-300+ (these shoes were like 3-4 inches long)Clothes: $100-200+ (tops the size of 2 adult hands)Strollers: $1,300-1,500+Granted, everything was made in Italy, and probably partially handmade, but still. I have nothing against rich people who wear $1,000 clothes buying expensive stuff for their kids, but clothes and shoes that they will outgrow in a mere months to max a year? That's just slightly more stupid than literally burning money. That's just wrong.

The same reason anyone buys anything couture, they care about fashion and are willing to pay for it. There's nothing more wrong about this than buying a gigantic house, or a sports car. It's what the person is interested in, and how they choose to spend their money.
10/24/2008 6:45:54 PM
what store was that?
10/24/2008 6:45:57 PM

10/24/2008 6:46:21 PM
I too had Italian shoes and clothes when growing up.No really, I did.And they cost $10-20. Not because it was long ago, but because they weren't designer brands.

I was about to say "I do," but then I opened the thread and saw it was for infants and toddlers. It's not very practical. I wouldn't do it, just because of that, even if i could afford to (and i had kids). For myself? Yeah, in a heartbeat.

i can understand buying a dress for like a really special occasion or maybe a nice outfit here and there. and i can definitely understand wanting to shell out money for an awesome highchair or crib but those things you can use over again with each child. plus, your kids safety is probably kindof a big deal.

so a good way to determine how much money someone has is by which eggplant they buy?
10/24/2008 7:06:59 PM
I would never buy my kid anything over 50$ when they grow up its going to be if you want it you work for it. that's what my rents did and i worked hard for everything i got even my $650 purse.

^^What's so stupid about that? Don't someone's car, clothes, house, and food give an indication of how much the person earns? Am I missing something? If you are going to buy vegetables/fruits that cost X, when the same items (but grown locally or in neighbouring countries) are available at a cost of X/5 or X/10, then of course you have a lot of money.(in a country where $15K-30K is the range for middle class salaries, $10/lb for lettuce imported from Holland is outrageously beyond the reach of the vast majority)(How is this so different from someone buying a $40,000 car vs. someone buying a $200,000 car?)

If you assume that you are paying for quality, I can understand purchasing higher end. In families with more than one child, some items may be used by several children. Cheap shoes, pants, and toys could be in shreds by the time it makes it down the line. That said, there is a limit. I think that spending $300 on infant shoes definitely crosses the line and then some.I can definitely see spending $1k on a stroller if you have the money to spend. Stroller quality is important and this is one area where you definitely get what you pay for. A stroller is something that you will use almost daily for several years.

Went to another store (still high quality, but not designer brands) where the following set was available:strollercar seatmoses basketshoulder bag for parentall for $500. And it was all made in Italy. And another similar set, but for $1,300 (also Italian, but better fabric and more features in the items). So yeah, $1,300-1,500 just for a stroller is ridiculous (which is why those were in the store selling $300 infant shoes).
