i'm thinkin with my phone being broken it may not be a bad idea to pick one up and maybe consolidate my devices so it comes down to my 30gb zune+ garmin nuvi 205w+ razr vs the iphone. the zune holds twice as much music but i only use it in the car and i probably listen to ab 6 gig of music tops. how's the gps features on the iphone? how's it compare to a real gps? love my razor durable (up until now) great battery has all the features i need. never was a fan of apple stuff since people buy it to look like elitist but it might make sense. do you guys think it's worth it to trade it all and take the all in one route?

It won't directly replace the Garmin Nuvi (yet), but it should work for everything else.

and..

iphones are a common enough sight now that you really shouldn't be worried about that, same with non-business people and blackberries.

^ first legitimate complaint. i own an iphone, and the one regret that i have about it is that you have NO tactile feedback from typing, so it's easier to screw up. Even with their autocorrect feature, it's not a lot of fun.

^ are you sure you're doing it right?

People have a tendency to tap under where the letters are, rather than right on top of them.

Also if you have a case for your iPhone that has thick edges around the screen, it affects hitting the edge buttons, and kind of throws off your typing all together.

Are you implying that there's a way he could type in which he would actually get tactile feedback?

i actually went to the store with the intention of buying an iphone but after playing with one for over an hour i still couldn't type a basic message without numerous mistakes. and i had to look at the pad, there was no way i would ever be able to type without looking. the problem was that my thumbs are bigger than the "keys" so sometimes it would register a letter to the side if my thumbs hit with any angle.

The key is to ignore the mistakes and let the auto-correct feature fix them for you. I find that 90% of the time it doesn't matter if I hit the right keys.

To each his own, but at this point I can't imagine sacrificing all that screen space for a phone with a physical keyboard ever again.

lol, the spell check system on the iphone is designed around this idea..basically that you'll hit the right number of letters but a few of them may be wrong.. if you had just kept typing and finished out the word with the mistake(s) it would have fixed them.

^^^^^ i do have an outside case, so that may be a small part of the problem. most of what i've seen is it "correcting" words that i've actually spelled correctly. is there a way to modify its dictionary? i haven't really looked, but that'd be a nice feature.

^^ i agree, the typing is a minor complaint for me. i use my iphone more to receive information than anything else.

well, yes, actually.....
haven't you seen the crap (computers and otherwise) that "The Populous" buys? They would prefer crap, as long as it's cheaper.

I could draw comparisons to the Presidential elections, but Ill try to keep politics out of this discussion....

It learns by you tapping the screen to ignore an autocorrection.

If you're typing a word you know it'll try and correct, before pressing space, tap the button that dismisses the little guessing box, and it learns that you really meant to type that word.

Apple obviously knew typing was going to be an issue, and they have done a great job engineering the typing interface.

I guarantee it's doing a lot more in the background than most people realize.

^ that's exactly why it's so laggy.

The iPhone is where computers were 10 years ago in terms of processing power.

the problem is that it's a required hipster accessory, and apple does seem to solely hire these people in apple stores, and direct all advertising towards them.

so it's more perception than reality, since the rest of us outnumber the hipster fags.
