Dude, to keep christmas cheap, you have to start planning EARLY.

Shit, I'm used to Black Friday being my mom's deadline last resort for Christmas shopping.

It's too early? I've been thinking about what to ask for and what I'm getting other people for a good while now. But I have been even more excited about the holidays than normal this year for some reason. And my parents always ask me way in advance what I want from them.

This, too.
And my birthday is 12/21, so my list always looks like the creation of some spoiled rich kid...until you account for large families + birthday. And then note that I've included cheap stuff

My mom has slacked off in the past, but it's been a standing expectation to have my list sent to her by halloween.

At what point does one become too old to actually put together a wish list of gifts?

I feel bad asking people to give me specific items for no reason at all.

my parents learned early on to just give us a $ cap, and the kids go and create an order sheet online with links to items and sizes / colors.

hard to get a bad gift you wont use if you picked it out.

we're nerds who have to have our spreadsheets in by thanksgiving.

You know, every single year I tell my parents what I want from them, and then I say, "PLEASE don't get me any other little doodad-type things that you just think are cute or whatever, because I already have way too much stuff that I don't need and really don't want to accumulate any more of it." Yet lo and behold, every single year ... little piddly crap shows up. Then I feel obligated to keep it. At least this year I'm flying back from Christmas so I have an excuse not to take extra stuff with me.

Good call.

I'm pretty sure all I'm getting is socks and camera lenses. Maybe some drum-related shit. My parents luckily don't do that knick knack stuff, and when they do it is usually something useful.

Never?
I don't think you should feel bad for making it easier for other people to shop for you. And doing your part to make sure you don't end up with something you'll never use, that someone gave you because they couldn't think of anything else. (Right now, I'm thinking of a trio of ripstop micky mouse clutch purses that a certain very hit-or-miss gift giver in my family gave me for a birthday present a year or two ago).

Hell, I've told my father that if he didn't give me a wishlist, he was getting coal on christmas. He never gave me one, so I contacted the blacksmith organization, and found a supplier willing to ship me a small quantity of bituminous coal, and wrapped it up. My whole family was like OH NO SHE DI'INT, but I've gotten a wishlist from my father every year. He's really hard to buy for

i just have a fundamental problem with practicing the gift giving aspect of Christman, while not practicing the religous aspect of Christmas.

Guess im weird

I thought it was gonna suck having a job so more people expected presents from me and the people I already gave presents too expected better presents

But I actually like spending money on people

Its my one non-machiavellian trait

This happens to me with books. I hardly read enough as it is, I've got stuff from High School Christmases and Birthdays that I haven't read. I specifically say, "don't buy any more books" and yet, I get them. And promptly sell them or donate them.

I revealed my new-found agnosticism to my mom this year, I wonder if it'll impact my gifts

I always am fascinated by the presents I get from my 'fringe' friends and relatives who I don't see on a regular basis. You get the most miscellaneous shit from people who have no idea of your interests and preferences. Last year I got a kaleidoscope, an Orlando Magic sweatshirt and a gift certificate to Talbots.

i think i'm only getting 9 gifts this year

mom
dad
brother
sister-in-law
her son
3 co-workers
and maybe one friend

but that's it

and they won't be nearly as nice as they have been in the past

it's interesting when your parents are split and you have to get gifts for siblings for both houses

i generally coordinate the gifts though

we just started the christmas spreadsheet this weekend - it helps me keep an eye on what i can spend (so i don't go overboard).

i don't really want someone to give me a list of items that they would like - i think it's far more fun to find something that they would love or something they wouldn't typically buy for themselves. i love giving presents!

With most of my relatives, I would rather give them something than spend time with them

At about a 1 dollar = 1 minute conversion rate

i thought about getting my family each their own personalized leather journals, but all the ones i've found cost $50+

i didn't want it to be their main gift, just something cute on the side. i'll have to keep searching i guess.

i'd really like a gps for christmas, or some cast iron skillets
