From what I understand, it is normal for all major surgery. You can't feel a thing, or at least I didn't when I had my appendix taken out. They put me under and then catheterized me.The not so fun part is the first time you have to go pee, after the surgery. Didn't really have much in the way of bladder control, and my stomach had just been cut open so I could barely sit up and drag myself to the bathroom (a nurse had to pull me up from the bed, yelping in pain...my stomach muscles just couldn't pull me up).Of course they need to know how much fluid you're urinating so you can't pee in the toilet, you have to go into one of the plastic container things. No bladder control = you just sort of dribble it out... I'm not sure if that's a side-effect of the being catheterized or of the surgery, but it wasn't particularly enjoyable. Didn't really hurt but it was weird to not have much control over the flow.

we only do it when necessaryit hurts me to cath a dude... there's something inherently wrong about it...]

My nephew has spina-bifida (spell?) He's numb from about belly button down so we have to put one of these on him every other day . He's a happy 4 year old otherwise though. Brain function is about 90% there too - he'll be going to regular school [Edited on November 1, 2008 at 1:02 AM. Reason : a]

I"m glad I don't remember the one I had going in. However, omg did it hurt going out.
11/1/2008 1:40:09 AM
why is it so necessary, can't you just use a bedpan?and from what I hear a lot of the time it's like that guy and you aren't even drugged when they stick it in
11/1/2008 2:03:13 AM
yep, happens all the timejust put one in a patient wed night.men with large prostates are difficult to cath...accurate urine outputs are important during surgery and for certain other patient populations

i had one put in when i was a fresh in hs after i had surgery for a broken ankle... i couldn't pee because of the drugs to knock me out. i tried and tried and tried, but eventually a nurse had to put in the tube. luckily i was on morphine drip at the time.

I had a catheter for about 24 hours when I had Silas. They'd already numbed me up for the C-section when they put it in, so I didn't feel it. And believe it or not, I was grateful that I had one for a day after surgery because 1.) I was just cut open and didn't want to move around a whole lot and 2.) I had been peeing every 5 minutes for the last month of my pregnancy and it was wonderful NOT to be running back and forth to the bathroom. It was uncomfortable when they removed it, but in comparison to having surgery, it wasn't that bad.

when i went to the ER 2 years ago for stomach pains, they put one ini wasn't under any medication yet...and that shit hurt and was very very uncomfortablethen came the drugs and i forgot all about it until they took it out

asked my girlfriend about this (RN) last night. every surgery victim has one. but they insert it while the victim is out and remove it before they wake up.so apparently my girlfriend plays with dicks all day and i get in trouble if i talk to a girl on the phoneinteresting

I had that done to me before when I shatter my femur. The pain wasn't that bad, felt like i was cumming up a storm in reverse.

11/1/2008 8:17:05 PM
if you end up in the ER you will probably get a Foley at some point or another. Also most surgeries get cathed so you're not pissing all over the sterile field
