I know there's a lot of fishing threads, but I didn't feel like looking through them all. I was just wondering what fishing lures you expert fishermen (or women) recommend? I've recently gotten a lot more into using artificial bait rather than live bait and I've had a little success with an artificial worm with a spinner attached, but I need some other recommendations.
any lures, types/brand names, etc. I could buy that stand out in your mind as working most of the time?
any suggestions would be great. 11/2/2008 10:36:05 PM |

Culprit on a texas or Carolina rig (worms lizards or crawdads)
POP-R when its hot and the lake is calm or any topwater for that matter
crankbaits rat'l traps spinnerbaits jigs when bass are spawning Swimbaits
if you wanna catch huge ones remember most of the time big fish want big lures but it is a lot less likely for them to bite
and all these baits are dependent upon weather/conditions for colors and time of use
as for catfish...the worse the bait smells, the better...go to wal mart and get stink bait or the grocery store and get livers
thats the basics of lures.

Don't be a wuss and wait on the surface for the fish to bite -- jump in and get 'em yourself.

i'm not much help on bass
i usually just throw one of the following if i have to bass fish: worm on a texas rig, spinnerbait, buzzbait, pop-R, or shallow-running crankbait
i'm more help on the saltwater inshore stuff. but it's all the same, weather and luck are much more important than lure selection. best thing to remember when fishing artificials for anything is to "match the hatch." find out what they're feeding on and pick a bait that looks like it. this usually works, but sometimes they'll want something a little bit different (maybe lime green or bright pink) to make your bait stand out from the actual forage they're feeding on. i like less flashy stuff when it's sunny and flashier stuff when it's cloudy.
for soft plastics, the new generation of scented, bio-degradable baits (like berkeley gulp, etc.) are very hard to beat. they cost more, but i've seen them outfish live bait numerous times. and they're better for the fish. they're completely digestable and harmless. if the one you're using gets torn up you can just toss it in the water. i swear by Gulp!

what are some good bass fishing spots around here?
I don't have a boat so it has to be a lake with a lot of shore access.
To answer this dude's question...I love Rebel Pop-R's. 11/3/2008 10:53:08 AM |

^ I used to go to Bond Park in Cary and rent a paddle boat to take out fishing. Caught the biggest bass of my life in that lake, just over 8lbs. I am not sure if they are still renting out the boats now though, since summer is over 11/3/2008 10:57:32 AM |

The ole standby for me has always been a Zoom Trick Worm. It seems like if they aren't biting anything else, i can always get a strike or two off of them. I keep a bag full of various colors.
Zoom Craws are really good too. 11/3/2008 2:31:11 PM |

^ because of the other gun thread. no reason to lock it imo though.
a beginner will have a lot of luck with rooster tails, small spinners etc. if they just want to catch a lot of fish. A zoom trick work rigged weedless with no weight and fished topwater will catch bass year round. I like white, pink, and black on a #1 worm hook. 11/6/2008 6:24:16 AM |
