I just happened to check it yesterday after buying some NES games on ebay, and HOLY SHIT it was back in stock!! I've been waiting a year and a half for this to be made again, and apparently yesterday was much lucky day, as they've sold out again today (probably for the rest of the year)
Amazing product, can't wait to try it out!

This will finally let me play the games that I've been relegated to on Emulation for years.
Translated Dragon Quests 1,2,3 All the unlicensed games that are literally impossible to buy Mega-man 1
It's really not much money considering how much I paid for several of my favorite NES games already 11/4/2008 6:04:30 PM |

i'm confused, as an emulator would give you better screen quality and the controllers are easy to make PC compatible with a $16 adapter, or buy a usb controller for $25
same games, same controller, lower price

it aint the same. I have an A/V Famicom, and finally a working family converter for it.
The feel and experience of the games just isn't there on the emulators. It could very well be placebo effect, but I enjoy the experience much, much more on the real thing.
Maybe it's the tv and living room setting? 11/4/2008 6:26:30 PM |

i have my emulator on a TV in the living room
i mean isn't this powerpak essentially making your AV Famicom into an emulator?

No, it's a reprogrammable rom package. Basically it does virtual EEPROM switching. It's a cartridge emulator in that sense I guess actually.

That is bad ass. An emulator will never replace the feeling of sliding one of these majestic carts into an actual Nintendo and hitting that beautiful power switch. 11/4/2008 10:11:47 PM |

^^but you only do that once, you don't remove the powerpak, you just put a compact flash card in it
(i still have my NES too)

That's fucking awesome, even if it does cost $Hyrule.
Is there any kind of serious homebrew scene for NES? Seems like it would be damned difficult, but it'd still be kinda cool.] 11/5/2008 10:45:59 AM |

They should have a small propeller in the cartridge that you have to blow into to spin before it'd work
might as well get the full experience 11/5/2008 1:38:43 PM |

^ They should. Looks pretty cool.
Are you sure they're sold out? I placed a mock order & it didn't say they were out of stock. Didn't fill out the paypal info though. 11/6/2008 3:27:33 PM |

The button will say "Temporarily Unavailable" if they are sold out. It's just hit or miss it seems 11/6/2008 4:40:33 PM |

back in the day on here, i said they should come out with a device like this... a NES cartridge shaped device that could run original NES game files on an actual NES.
you people (probably Noen) said it was simply impossible to do that since the architecture of the games were so much different.
pwnt.

^This has been out for over a year. And people have been doing eeprom cards since the NES came out. The only thing "different" about this one (and awesome) is the ability to virtualize the mappers.
It's always been possible, it's been done, this is just the first plug-n-play variant (and it's not new, just new to me). You definitely aren't the only one who has been wishing for this since the beginning of NES emulation!

So is the circuitry required just that complex, or is this an issue of the manufacturers keeping supply low to jack up demand?
Cause I really don't see why those things available at 1000 different online stores for $8 a piece. 11/6/2008 7:42:19 PM |

^^i posted about one of these about 4 or 5 years ago on Tdub I think.
and everyone was so damn adamant that it was impossible! 11/6/2008 8:11:52 PM |

^^Custom PCB, with low demand, and a guy making them with little to no capital. Might be 8 bucks if they made 20,000,000 of them, but I doubt there's that kind of demand.
