He and the Alaskan electorate did it so he can get back in there, resign and then have another republican appointed by Gov. Sarah Palin.

is that really how that works? thats interesting. Why isnt he automatically "resigned/removed" upon conviction and sentencing? seems kinda silly for palin and the electorate to have to go through all that.

why have the guy on the ballot in the first place

^ because he's a grade-A douchebag.

but for serious, he was left on the ballot because he was placing odds that he'd be acquitted of the charges. and when he wasn't, they couldn't change the ballot.

all in all, a perfect example of why our democracy is sometimes a bit slow to catch up with events.

Stevens will be impeached and removed.

Palin will appoint herself.

Palin can't appoint anyone, thanks to AK elections law. But it's pretty likely that she could choose to stand in a special election for his senate seat, if he resigns.

The governor only appoints a temporary replacement:

Quote :
"The fact is, replacement of an Alaskan U.S. Senator or U.S Representative who resigns or dies in office is a two-step process. First, the governor would appoint a temporary replacement to cover the seat so we would not be unrepresented. Then, within a certain time, a special election would take place so Alaskans can choose a permanent replacement."
