I think there may have been a thread on this, I dunno.
I watch a lot of movies based on what is said on TWW. A lot of times, the movies turn out really good. For instance, Cannibal Holocaust was one of the most disturbing movies I have ever seen, mainly because it was made in the late 70's (I think) and it looks so real and dimented despite limited technology. But sometimes I read threads and I see people all of a sudden jump on a movie bandwagon just because the movie seems original, even though it may suck.
Case in point, Funny Games. I have seen several threads on that movie, and most of the reviews say it's really disturbing and in general, a good movie to watch. Well, I watched it. It's not really that disturbing at all. As a matter of fact, it's ridiculously annoying how the main characters refuse to really fight back, and when they do get away, they get caught again. And the scene with the remote control... seriously, wtf. It's like you're kind of in a thriller horror movie, then you step into the Matrix for about 30 seconds. That is not creativity or being cultured, it's absolute bullshit. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I didn't do my book report, and so the night before I'd read part of a book, then bullshit in front of the class and give the old "if you want to find out the ending, you'll have to read the book routine." Not because I didn't want to give away the ending, simply because I had only read half the book and I didn't know what the hell happened at the end. Funny Games is a similar copout. Was it original? Yes. Did it suck really bad? Absolutely. Would I be cultured if I liked it? According to many on TWW standards, yes.
Anyway, TWW, I hate you for a little while for making me sit through that bullshit and making me think the whole time it was gonna get better. I will forgive you in time, but I may never fully trust you again. 11/7/2008 4:27:52 PM |

I bet he just finds it annoying that there are people who feel the need to whine extensively about people having different opinions and how TWW moviewatchers are all elitist assholes (who only like movies to seem "cultured" or some bullshit, whatever your argument is) when we're nothing of the sort
and some of us (OMG!) actually like the movies we say we like, not just because it's the thing to do
I don't know of anyone who's discussed Funny Games in particular, and I really don't care
nor do I understand why you're concerned that other people may like it, since again, people have different opinions on movies

What's more "elitist?"
1. Liking Funny Games
or
2. Telling people who like Funny Games that they don't actually like it, but are merely pretending to like it so people will think they're "cultured." 11/7/2008 7:18:06 PM |

No and yes. V for Vendetta was a pretty big movie that was even a semi-blockbuster that had enough action to where you could possibly still enjoy the movie without getting the message.
Yes for Donnie Darko because it was not big in the box office and has become a cult classic...and pretty much is all about how you interpret it.11/8/2008 1:51:55 PM |

I enjoyed it, good but not great. But my god is that one of the most overhyped movies ever. Its really at its worst though when people argue to finite details the "correct" interpretation of what happened.
