severance pay, what's that?! seriously though, i have none. i was working as a contract employee with a large company.

i'm a mechanical engineer and the market i was in (tied to housing) is taking a huge shit so i did see it coming. you're still never 100% prepared.

^^seriously.

i thought i was secure for the time being though. many people have taken other jobs recently and we were already short-staffed so i figured with tons of work and only a couple guys they wouldn't get rid of me.

guess the money just wasn't there.

^hahah.

MAE is hiring a professor

if you have a doctorate and a hearty hatred of students you should go for it

Luckily I got work I can do for the city. But I'll probably go back to grad school while the economy sucks.

well, not to rub it in, but my boss has been trying hard to keep me around for another year (back in august i told him i would be leaving at the end of the year). he made me an offer i can't refuse, which is an assistantship at Savannah River Ecology Lab (what's left of it) and basically a foot in the door at UGA for graduate school. it has nothing to do with money, in all likelihood i'll probably be worse off financially seeing as im going to have to pay rent again, but any aspiring herpetologist will tell you SREL is a stepping stone to a career working with reptiles and amphibians.

not that anyone cares...

but i feel for ya, mang. it took me forever to find a worthwhile job after graduating. but at least you got a good degree. just stay out of the housing market. [/obvious]

Don't go jobless for several months just because you can't find the one you want. I've never understood why people did that. Job hunting is not a full time job. At the minimum fucking work at McDonald's or something while you're job hunting. It'll keep you from sitting on your ass and feeling sorry for yourself, you won't burn through your savings as quickly, and having a shitty job is just more motivation to find a good one.

^^ jesus!

hopefully i won't be unemployed more than a week. my impromptu interview this afternoon went really well and i think i'll get an offer by wednesday.

^ i totally agree. with a mortgage and bills, i've got to have something NOW.

^^ depends on where/how you are interviewing... a shit job could keep you from having time to meet people during normal business hours.

I would get a job at a bookstore or something

Well yeah, I mean I'm not encouraging him to begin a new career in food service or anything, I'm just saying that it makes no sense to do nothing when you can get a job doing weekends and evenings just to make ends meet. Most people who are unemployed are unemployed by choice. Unless you're a complete retard, a multiple felon, or physically handicapped you can find a job. Maybe not a career, but a job, and the vast majority of the time you can keep that job if you show up, work hard, and keep your mouth shut.

well i'm waiting until wednesday when i hear back from this other place.

if it's good news, i'll start monday and just take a week off.
if it's bad news, i plan to apply at home depot or something. that was the plan to begin with.

so i'm willing to work just to make ends meat, but i hope i can snag something quickly and have a mini-vacation instead

Although I feel pretty good in my current field...I'm glad I can always fall back on bartending as a good paying job should things ever get rough. Gets a little depressing listening to everyone's hard times right now.

Don't know you personally...but good luck man.
