Starting early 2009 and FREE

Route probably going to look something like that and it will run from 7 AM till either 11 PM or 2 AM. I think they are still trying to decide on the stop time but it better be 2.

Does no one on here actually go downtown?

My goal for the afternoon is to find one other person who also appreciates this

Yeah I live down there now and walk everywhere. So this will just make me a fatass.

It's still a pretty good haul from Glenwood South to Fayetteville Street and Moore Square. That big dead area down Hillsborough St. is one of the biggest flaws with downtown. This will connect the 4 "districts" or whatever you want to call them so that if you want to go out you're not limited to one area.

Because sadly most people find the idea of walking to be appalling.

If they had some bus that would run from campus to some downtown bars/clubs it would help out some of the over 21 people on or around campus.

" The City of Raleigh will have an open forum on a proposed downtown
circulator bus service. The forum will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 from
3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Room 303 of the Avery C. Upchurch Government
Complex, located at 222 W. Hargett St. At this forum, Raleigh citizens will
have the opportunity to drop-by and provide input regarding proposed routing
and suggested stops for the downtown circulator service.

The City of Raleigh plans to launch the downtown circulator service in
Raleigh's central business district in February 2009. This service would be
provided by a hybrid electric bus specifically designed for this service.
The proposed downtown circulator is intended to help employees, residents
and visitors in the central business district by providing connectivity to
retail, restaurants, entertainment venues and parking. The bus would run
every 10 to 15 minutes, and would be free to all commuters.

For more information about the proposed downtown circulator service or
Thursday's forum, contact Stacey Carless, Transit Marketing Specialist, at
996-3030 or email Stacey.carless@ci.raleigh.nc.us."

"The city presented its plan for a new downtown circulator bus Thursday. Here are the details:

Cost: free.

The route goes from Peace Street down Glenwood South, over to Dawson, cuts across Cabarrus, loops around the Convention Center and back up Wilmington to Peace. Take a look a the proposed route here.

Buses will come every 10 minutes.

Hours:
Mon-Wed 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Thurs-Sat 7 a.m. to 2:15 a.m.
Sun 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The City has already bought three 40-foot hybrid-electric buses and plans to have two running when the route is going. Federal funds paid for 80 percent of the new buses.

Read more and see the City’s presentation at raleighpublicrecord.org."

it's time for the circulator
it's time for the circulator
it's time for the circulator
it's time for the circulator

but uh this seems to be a good way to get between bars but have no effect on getting from residential areas (for common folk like me) to/from bars without driving drunk?

it's like an easier way for people in $500K condos to do bar crawls?

I would respond to that with a few things...

-Very true. That is a problem, but a much bigger and more expensive problem that would take big dollars to solve.
-Everyone who lives downtown isn't rich. I pay $690 a month rent.
-Make no mistake about it, this is mainly being done because of the convention center. The city doesn't give a shit about its residents. Thankfully we will benefit from it anyway.
-Once people are downtown, most people are too lazy to walk anywhere, so this links together the "districts" that are separated from each other a bit too much

^ That was one of the first things I thought of. A lot of people do that for the novelty of it, though, so hopefully it won't hurt them too much.

is raleigh really that hard to walk or is it just not normal for people to walk around in raleigh?

I lived in cary and never walked around raleigh but now living in chicago I basically walk everywhere, with my cap being about 1.5 miles before I default to public transportation

Now how about a train that runs from downtown up to campus and a free bus back to Kaplan.

Then I could get rid of my spare car.

I am all for Raleigh beefing up public transportation, especially trains/light rail. Doing this later is just going to cost more than it would now.

"Raleigh's circulator will begin operation Feb. 14 on a three-mile, counterclockwise route. The path takes in Peace Street and state government on the north, Glenwood South on the west, the convention center on the south, and Wilmington Street on the east.

At night, the route grows jug ears to reach around Moore Square on the east and the warehouse district on the west.

The Raleigh circulator will run from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and until 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday nights. Sunday has a reduced schedule, 1 to 8 p.m.

Stand on that route during those hours, and you won't wait long for a bus.

"So if you can't find a place to park right beside where you work, this will be a convenient alternative to that," said David Eatman, Raleigh's transit administrator. "It will pick you up every 12 to 14 minutes and take you to within a block of your employment."

Or let's say you work in a government building, and you want to eat lunch at the other end of downtown -- Brightleaf Square in Durham, or Glenwood South in Raleigh. Leave the car where it is and catch the circulator."
