So I heard a rumor about steam tunnels running under the entire main campus. Apparently there is an entrance near the library and also in Syme Hall? Can anyone confirm this rumor? And if so, how do you get down there?

All I know is I was freezing one morning, crossed over a grill in the ground, and went, Aaaaahhhhhhh...

you get down there by breaking the law and trespassing, also breaking some locks, and will inevitably get caught as they have simple cheap sensors to detect you and figure out when end you will be emerging... not a good idea....they do exist[Edited on November 20, 2008 at 11:11 AM. Reason : good luck]

i went a few times while i was a student - got caught once because one of the guys with us tripped a silent alarm on one of the doors entering a building you'll still be able to see ZIDIK spray painted down there in a few places - but uhhhhh it wasn't me - someone else must have done it in my honor maybe

there used to be a midget maintenance worker that occasionally accessed the steam via that little door in the free expression tunnel- saw him on my way to class sometimes. i don't know if he still works there though (this was '01-'05)

There is one door in the basement of Syme that I have never been in and never saw open. It is on the south side right by where that image shows the tunnel being. However, since I left I know they renovated the basement and there is now a hallway that has been closed off in that location.

I have pictures somewhere from when construction was going on a few years ago and it was opened up between the C Store and the tunnel. The elevated garden thing right there has a gate to go down which was wide open and blocked off from sight by some particle board walls so we wandered them for a bit. It was neat.

I went through there my sophomore year. There was an entrance near some construction that apparently wasn't alarmed, because I got in and out without getting caught. There were two exits, one with a really long ladder and one past that.I took the ladder. It was awesome.

that'd be sweet to go down there without getting in trouble
11/20/2008 12:06:34 PM
They keep you out of them because they're considered confined spaces and actually have some chemicals in the air that could do serious harm to your body. But if you don't care about the health risks, it'd be fun until you get caught.

ughi have some kind of claustrophobiaexploring those would not be fun
11/20/2008 12:26:03 PM
first time i went in a boiler at work this past summer i kinda got this claustrophobic feeling going through the access door. it's about a 20" diameter circle. if you start feeling stuck, you're instinct tells you to try harder, which is the opposite of what you need to do. kinda weird the first time, but i got used to it.

I spent a couple of hours down there sophomore year. I got in through the little hut that used to be across from Reynolds. I lived in Syme and yes, there is an "entrance" there, but it is impossible to get into. The main one exits into a couple of buildings, but those doors are rigged with silent alarms. We had a lot of fun exploring, and didn't get caught. Main thing is that it's hotter than hell down there, bring a bottle of water or something to avoid the temptation to go into a building and use the water fountain. And, in general, be aware that going down there is illegal, you can get caught, and it will suck if you do.
