Well do they just show up? Cause chances are good that I'm not gonna just answer my door to some random dudes... Is it scary? And why does the process cost like $70,000?

They will usually call you and setup an appointment at a time and place that is convenient to you (at work, etc). They usually want to speak with you ASAP; same day if possible.

It's a little nerve-wrecking when someone comes to talk to you and flashes a federal badge in your face, but it's really no big deal.

The cost depends on the level of clearance, but if they have to send out lots of people to do one-on-one interviews, along with other checks associated with the SSBI, it adds up. Plus I think they make it expensive so that only the people who really need it will apply for one.

Well I remember when my college roommate's father retired from the Navy but then was working in the Pentagon, so they spent money on his clearance thing but it was no where near $70,000....and actually, I think this one now that I'm talking about is more like $90,000. And this person isn't the one paying for it...the government is so is this high or low on the $$ scale?

The cost varies depending on the level of clearance, the scope of the SSBI, and if it's expedited.

$90k seems pretty high.

Well I don't know where it is in the process...but supposedly it's like a year or year and half.... That can't be the 'quick' way.....?

Well I'm fairly closely related to this person so I don't see how I wouldn't be interviewed... This person wouldn't tell me what the clearance was for...but that may be because they think I have a big mouth....

90k's not high at all, depending on what clearance they're getting.

My dad was an investigator for the Defense Security Service for 20 years.

It's not scary when they show up to your house, but they will hound the shit out of you to get you to sit down with them.

I'm sure a few people got interviewed when I had to get cleared

70k isn't all that high either. I think my company paid anywhere between 100-150k for my clearance

also, I don't think that individuals can apply for a security clearance. you have to be sponsored by a company, institution, etc...

My sister-in-law is in the process of being cleared. Someone made an appointment with her mother and interviewed her. Then my mother-in-law took the guy around to a few neighbors so that he could ask questions.

My in-laws said that he was mostly interested in accounting where she was during every period of her life. . .jobs. . .school. . .finances. I guess to make sure she didn't run off to join a cult for a year and that she doesn't have so much debt that she'll be bribed.

I had to do it once for a buddy of mine. It wasn't too bad. They ask you a bunch of national security-esque questions about your friend.

"To your knowledge does [name] ever associate with any foreign nationals?", etc.

^^^^ they basically want to be able to build a profile on the applicant to see if there are any patterns that might emerge (that could be troublesome). Also, they want to make sure that you don't have any "dirt" on you that you could be blackmailed with, or otherwise extorted. Similarly, they want to make sure your finances are in order so that the chances are slim that you will be susceptible to bribes.

I had a DOD guy knock on my door to ask about a neighbor that I had never met/spoken with.

when I had my active clearance they asked my friend if i ever drank too much, and he was like, i mean, maybe a few times in college, we were college students

and then the guy asked if i had ever smoked pot, and my friend said yes (i had told him and everyone i could contact that might be contacted to be honest and upfront), and the guy said well how do you know? and my friend said "cause i smoked it with him!"

haha

good friends
