Male hippos kill baby hippos.

Female hippos, who have cared for their babies since birth, try desperately to stop them, but they are like 400 lbs smaller and therefore weaker.

So eventually, when momma hippo rolls up on papa hippo at the wrong time he viciously attacks the baby. The attack takes minutes. The baby makes horrid screams. Momma tries to stop the attack, but can do nothing. Eventually baby hippo is killed.

Then momma hippo cries over baby hippo's body for like two days straight and refuses to re-join the hippo family.
