I went there with a couple of friends after a two year hiatus. They stopped serving Guinness on tap, and we were rushed out at midnight. WTF when did Mitch's close at midnight? It was never the greatest place to drink, but it was a quiet, chill place to hang and drink, and a a great alternative to the Glenwood South scene.

I got fucked up there once or twice.

The inlaid wood gave a certain mid-Atlantic authenticity that you can only find in certain latitudes obviously.

Nice ambience to not care you're in a high-end dive, where I probably belong.

Mitch's closes whenever the bartender decides it closes.

One night a few years back one of the girls was fighting with her boyfriend on the phone, slammed it down and called last call with fifteen people in the bar.

It was 10:55.

I've been a patron for many years. I've moved to Durham so I don't frequent Mitch's much. I actually miss it. James Joyce and all the shitty bars around Brightleaf suck. Mitch's was much better IMO. I don't necessarily think it's the money. There were 8 people in my party alone and we were spending money with no signs of slowing down the drinking.

I remember if you walked down Hillsborough Street (i.e. during Hike Night) and dropped a grand you could buy the whole block a drink because it was all the money in the world.
You lack the infrastructure to even obey code enforcement (the unfortunate happenstance of Gumby's demise) and your profit margins are razor thin so that a kid walks up with some money you can sell beer like you're pushing a narcotic. The Hillsborough business average overhead has got to be pennies on the dollar.

In Ghent, I used to go to New Belmont for drinks. Across the street from it is this place called The Taphouse. Amazing beers, and great food.

Nearby is this awesome pizza place called Cogan's. They have this amazing pizza with a spicy sauce. pool tables in the back...

On Granby street, there are more bars, restaurants, and clubs than you can imagine.
clubs:
I stayed away from Fahrenheit because they used 'discriminatory practices' in admitting people. they were in the paper for it.

There's granby theatre that was renovated into Club Premier. Pretty decent place. Expensive drinks.

There's Club Sevens. A newly built 3 story club. Basement is a sports bar, entry level, 2nd and 3th floors play different music

restaurants....they're all good

bar....they're all good. we used to hit up Scottie Quixx. There's also a huge sports bar called Baxter's. Watch out, they have a VIP section that gets me in trouble

If I had to call it, I would say Raleigh is better. But that's not based on nightlife, culture, etc.....
it's based on the fact that Norfolk (ghent) is an inner city where people get robbed and shot all the time. Recently there were some shootings there, and it took a couple of days to make an arrest.

You'll see what I mean though...

i've been going there for 13 years

and in the last year or so it's been taking a nosedive

the service from one or two employees has been highly questionable, and quite frankly, outright bizarre at times

i think my social club is going to move its activities to player's retreat on a permanent basis

[Edited on November 25, 2008 at 8:22 PM. Reason : oh and the no guinness on tap was the last straw]

^x3 what kind of odd serving activities? I think I was overcharged on my card. I've only been to PLayer's Retreat during the Hike or for Lunch. I might have to check it out on a Fri. night Oh and last I was there people were lighting up.

PR's is great.

My opinion of Mitch's as gone up and down. I don't care about smoking or guinness, both suck. but the service for the last few years has been subpar sometimes. Unless the waitress or bartender knew you, then it seemed to be fine.

I remember that when I used to go there alone, I'd hardly get serviced by the bartender, and she made me feel like an asshole for being in her bar. But then when I went with others, and she happened to remember someone (they went there kind of often), she was one of the best bartenders around.

I've been through that several times.

its been doing that for at least four years. i used to go there almost daily and on monday and tuesday they close by 12. if we were actually spending good money they'd clean up around us and we'd get out by 1230 or so.

i still like it, though. but i have to be with the right crowd.

That may be the case for weekdays, but certainly not on a friday/saturday night.

read the thread dummy. I said I haven't been in two years. I used to go often. Now that the GF and a couple buddies live in Raleigh I was excited to swing by again.

The disappearance of Guinness on tap disturbs me. Hopefully that will make its return--and closing at midnight on a weekend?? I am concerned.

a lot of bars are like that. especially places that are just about empty after 11 or so most weeknights, or places that make money on serving dinner plus have a bar crowd. not everywhere is glenwood south.

They had Guinness on tap over the summer, but then when I went back after school started, they no longer had it. They said they were going to get it in the can. Now I get the Cuban and a Long Hammer for lunch.

Yup, they've called last call at midnight the previous three times I've been there. Plus we were kicked out this past Friday when the bartender bitch freaked out over an airplane bottle of wine.

The first time we were rushed out at midnight, there was a group of 22 of us who were ALL drinking. This last time when we were thrown out for the wine, there was a group of 11 of us; ALL drinking.

I understand why the wine was a no no, but it was empty and everyone was drinking from the bar at this point. No money lost.

^ i'da thrown your stupid asses out too. those kind of shenanigans are what cause bartenders to get fined and the business to lose their liquor license. you don't bring your own fucking alcohol into a bar, you jerkoff

as to the OP, I'd say Guinness is kind of overplayed. I guess it serves as a fallback option for places that carry mostly high-volume domestics, but there are plenty of german imports and midsize american craft brews that are way better than Guinness.

so maybe that's Mitch's angle? i dont really know tho, i havent been in there for several years.
