and I told him it's because I'm a guitar player and I either wear suits or t-shirts and don't go to any functions where a polo shirt is appropriate.

Then I realized that I sound like Nick Andopolous when he says, "I'm a drummer."

The point stands about the polos, though...I don't go anywhere where they're appropriate.

we're supposed to have company polos

but until we get some more, he told me just to wear a regular one

and i told him all i had was a white one, which is no good because i do a good bit of small metal work and fabrication

and he was baffled that anyone wouldn't have polo shirts

^^ merchandise repairs and modifications

we do a lot of customized items that require an experienced hand

i'm of the opinion that a place is either casual enough for a t-shirt and jeans or formal enough for a shirt and tie...i think polo shirts just look bland and bad

I think I learned about this in POM...something about how that makes you not a good manager...since you can't let your employees do their job. Not saying you aren't but I really think that was a point they made..

I dont own one pair of khakis. I hate them and think they are worthless and quite ugly. I also wore them to school all through middle school and high school - so maybe im biased haha.

I wear black or gray slacks to work everyday with a button up shirt most days and polos here and there. Since I started doing recruiting for our company, we all wear company polos and the groups ive gone out with to schools want to match pants and they always pick khaki . i bought a pair of brown slacks and wear those instead; no one has said anything yet luckily haha.

not directly related, but people are always genuinely shocked when I say that I don't own one pair of khakis.

work, jeans and polo...although Friday is casual and I go with some sort of T shirt usually sports related. I am beginning to move that to Mon-Thurs also (since many coworkers do); however, I bought a good amount of polos last year after I started working at this location.

probably true...i'm a control freak and not a good manager at all

i'd much prefer having no employees, but that would mean i'd have to work every day which is not going to happen

whatever floats your boat

you can't play guitar in a polo shirt and be taken seriously

come to think of it...kim deal can play guitar in a polo shirt and be taken seriously, but kim deal might be the coolest person on earth

she could probably play guitar in a chicken suit and pull it off

If you decide to get some polo shirts, go to http://www.jiffyshirts.com

They have a bunch of name brand stuff for pretty cheap price. I just bought 2 new ones a couple weeks ago for $40 or so (polyester polos usually cost 40-60 a piece)

If you can't play guitar in a polo shirt and be taken seriously, then you can't play guitar and be taken seriously. I figure of all people on here, you'd be the last the associate attire with a musician's merit.

my philosophy on a musician's attire is the same as my philosophy on my personal attire

you either go full formal (suits or uniforms) or full casual (whatever you were wearing during sound check)

polo shirts are okay, but you're immediately working from an aesthetic deficit

I won't argue with you on that, I think polo shirts are usually pretty unnecessary as well. They fall into that weird grey area between casual and nice most times. However, I am a drummer/musician/artist/whateverhiphobbyyoucaretoinserthere and I own polo shirts, not because I think they are cool, but because I think that it is hard to be taken seriously as a working adult and college graduate without them. You've got to play the game man.

But events arent either "very formal" or "very casual" Your opinion on fashion is simply flawed.

Though i I do tend to wear button downs in most situations where a Polo would be very much appropriate.

^ i never claimed they were

i claimed that they're either formal enough for a suit

or informal enough for a t-shirt

the polo shirt is purpose-built for no man's land

blue collar vs white collar perhaps? get a job that doesn't involve the risk of fucking up your clothes and i bet you'd eventually own more polos.

and i get that you're trying to appear funny or smart or whatever with all this "the polo shirt is purpose-built for no man's land" shit, but it's just not working.

but a white collar job implies a shirt and tie

i'm just sayin', i ain't never wearin' no polos

incidentally, i'm at work right now and i'm wearing a marc bolan t-shirt

not so much...that's a little too literal.

Quote :
"White-collar worker refers to a salaried professional or an educated worker who performs semi-professional office, administrative, and sales coordination tasks, as opposed to a blue-collar worker, whose job requires manual labor. "White-collar work" is an informal term, defined in opposition to "blue-collar work"."

What if your job falls into neither/both of those? I'm a salaried professional who works in an office, but I wear cowboy shirts to work, mostly.

ok, if you think you can start a pop/rock band and wear polos, you're kidding yourself. New music isn't about just the music, its a function of local and national culture. you can't convince people that what you're playing or saying has any merit or relevance if you look like your daily routine involves driving your jetta to harris teeter to buy cabernet for your pot luck dinner party.

established musicians can wear whatever the hell they want, see: brian wilson, david gilmore, ect.
