I am on the verge of accepting a part time internship for next semster. I am currrently a sophomore, COM.

I honestly have no clue to as what I will be doing. The guy just sent me an email asking how much I want per hour. This is after the interview and everything and I am pretty sure I got the internship.

How should I respond? Min wage? I am not sure how much value I would add to their company and I had 1 previous internship before and that was unpaid. It is at a financial service firm.

my internship my freshman (2001 summer) and sophomore year (2002 summer) i got $12 & $13/hr at an IT shop in KY and my junior (2003 summer) and senior (2004 summer) years i got paid $18.75 and $21/hr with ibm

Most people I knew made between 12 & 18. I made 15 & 16.50.

i got $20/hour with TIAA-CREF in 2007.

depending on the job....$8/hour is an insult. If it is corporate, they will pay WAY more than that. Usually in the 14-18/hour range.

I would give the person a range...if you are pretty sure you have the job, they arent going to give it to someone else based on what you say. If you tell them you want 18 and they say we can do 14 and you dont want that, then they may give it to someone else...but they arent just going to ask you and if its not what they were thinking, just drop you. They will usually (in my experience) tell you what they are wanting to offer even if its not what you want. negotiation is possible in most places.

umm... no. Sure engineers, financial guys, etc may get paid $10-$30/hr for internships. The OP just said internship and com major. If there were more to the internship, etc, I'm sure it would have been stated. Seeing as how it wasnt, I was assuming this to be a local/small company needing someone with a communications background. These positions are not typically paid more than $12/hr for young interns.

I would guess 10-13 for COM as well. As a second semester sophomore I got right around 18 or 19 in CHE, and then next co-op rotation it was about 20

there is a big range depending on the company, type of work, etc. anywhere from $7 - $18 could be reasonable. for a small local company i might think $9-$12, but that could vary depending on what you are doing.

I know a com major making $24/hr as an intern at one of the big tech companies in the area...

that is all the information I shall offer though... But know that it IS possible for com majors to make the same as Engineers...

i (for some reason) thought OP was talking about COM as college of management. My internship was a financial internship. Thats where my $20/hour came from.

COM accounting interns i knew were offered $23-25/hour... i don't know if that is still the case.

obviously it is going to depend on the company and the field you're in. i would ask someone in your department. they should have an idea about what their students/intern candidates are worth. if they don't keep track of that stuff... they should.

I made $20/hour as a marketing intern as a junior.

I suggest asking for $15, and bartering from there.

are you going to be contributing to the company? if so, how much would they have to pay to get that amount of work done if you wouldn't be doing it?

I didnt get paid anything for my internship, but it led to a job and they hired me before I graduated in May.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned before ^ that the internship's real value is in the experience. The money is just icing on the cake, although nothing says you can't ask for a corner piece.

yea honestly, when I was looking for an internship, money was way down on my list of importance. Relevance to what I was interested in, finding a company who said they tend to offer full time positions to their interns, how much real work vs busy work would I be doing etc. was a lot more important. Obviously money plays some role when choosing between a few that you like if you have options, but I wouldn't take one for more money simply for the money.
