my brother already is going to, and apparently they'll pay me to go to school. thoughts/prayers?
12/1/2008 10:33:33 PM
do it. give back to your nation
12/1/2008 10:34:37 PM
i really don't think you should base something like that on if they'll pay for your school.
12/1/2008 10:34:41 PM
semen
12/1/2008 10:35:27 PM
apparently they also think it's a good career move. anyone have experience using chemical engineering in the military?
12/1/2008 10:36:14 PM
I've heard of some programs where if you become an officer they pay off all of your student loans.I don't know if with a CHE degree you be better off in the military considering there is more pay in the civilian world. Unless they're giving you bonuses or something like that.

^,^^ done and done in that thread. i was hoping he could chime in and hopefully there are enough people which experience in this that it could aide me in making an informed decision
12/1/2008 10:50:18 PM
a career in the military is generally full of tremenous opportunities, great adventure, and enormous, ridiculous asspain. over to you on whether it's what you want.don't do it to get your school paid for, though. that's retarded.
12/1/2008 10:52:01 PM

12/1/2008 11:06:28 PM
I had a freind who did this. He had one bad semester, and they sent him to nuke school. Your ass is theirs.Have you thought about ROTC? or loans?[Edited on December 1, 2008 at 11:09 PM. Reason : ]
12/1/2008 11:08:25 PM
umm fuck your parentsno really....why are you even questioning something they WANT you to do.its your life, if thats what you want to do then do it but dont let them sway you into a commitment like that because you have to follow into your brothers footsteps
12/1/2008 11:08:54 PM
Do you even want to be in the Navy?
12/1/2008 11:10:14 PM
i wouldn't really mind working for the government/military. i don't really like the idea of having to go to boot camp but apparently with the degree i'd be an officer. i was told by my brother i wouldn't have to do any kind of rotc in college.i have loans right now, it'd just be cheaper for me and i'm curious as to what it'd mean as far as the rest of my college experience goes and after college what i'd have to do/be able to do]

the nukes accept most technical majors, CHE is fine. They pay you about $2500/month until you graduate. the application process is extremely long and painful though. I'm a nuke instructor, so my program is a different than the sub/carrier nukes but the application process is the same. I can tell you more if you're interested. ]
12/1/2008 11:18:02 PM

^^i wanna know more.^suck my nuts TUFF GUY]
12/1/2008 11:22:17 PM
OK, I found a nice long PM I sent to someone who asked me about the program earlier...You have to have a science/engineering degree or be in progress for one. You have to have a good GPA. If you get accepted while in school you have to maintain a 3.5 GPA, I think. You get paid about $2500/mo until you graduate!! I wish I had applied before graduation and I highly recommend it if he's sure he wants to do this. Also you have to pass a physical fitness test (pushups, situps, 1.5 mile run) every 6 months while in school. If you're in any kind of shape the test is not that hard to prepare for, you can look up the standards online. Even if he can't pass the test now, he can go ahead and apply because the application takes a while and he can train. The application process is a pain in the ass and can take up to a month or 2. The security questionnaire is really long and you have to have a reference for all your addresses and all your jobs in the past 7 years. I've had about a dozen of each so it took me forever to track them all down. The process will take longer if you have drug charges, DUI, suspicious foreign travel, etc. You also have to list all drug use and it's pretty much a deal breaker if you've used marijuana more than 7 or so times in your life. You have to go on a "VIP trip" to Charleston to tour the nuke school and meet instructors. They put us up in a nice hotel and paid for dinner.Once your paperwork is done, if you pass you get invited to an interview in Washington DC. The interview lasts most of the day and consists of 2 technical interviews with engineers and a brief interview with the Admiral of the nuclear Navy. The Admiral has the final say on whether you get accepted or not. If he says yes, a few minutes after leaving his office a minion comes out and tells you "congratulations." About 90% of people who make it to DC are accepted. Once you're accepted you can swear in and start getting paid the very same day!If you're a Surface Warfare officer, after graduation you'll go to OCS which is a 12 week program to teach you to be an officer. It's pretty tough and I highly recommend getting in good physical shape before going there, especially running.
12/1/2008 11:26:06 PM
^thank you.
12/1/2008 11:31:47 PM
12/1/2008 11:34:52 PM
how do they go about confirming your drug use story is true? a polygraph?
12/1/2008 11:36:34 PM
there's not a polygraph test that I know of
12/1/2008 11:38:19 PM
then how do they confirm?
12/1/2008 11:38:57 PM
i think you have to take a polygraph for certain security clearances[Edited on December 1, 2008 at 11:40 PM. Reason : ^prolly just a signed statement]
12/1/2008 11:39:29 PM
well i don't have any drug use/skeletons in my closet
12/1/2008 11:42:43 PM
just yourself, eh?
12/1/2008 11:43:11 PM
so if you don`t have any charges and as long as nobody from your past comes forward with a vendetta then you can just lie?
12/1/2008 11:43:50 PM
pretty much
12/1/2008 11:45:36 PM
honesty should be beneficial in society, especially when you are further distancing yourself from stuff you did in the past. this is clear proof that honesty is never the best policy
12/1/2008 11:46:50 PM
you should worry about maintaining a 3.5 in CHE
12/1/2008 11:49:51 PM
in rotc, they basically told us that it was ok if you *experimented* with marijuana as long as you promised not to do it again
12/1/2008 11:49:58 PM
12/1/2008 11:52:24 PM
BDCP is what you're looking for (bachelorette degree completion program). You need to get a few credits under your belt first. So my advice isn't good enough for you, you have to run to tww? I see how it is
