I'm still not sure. I'm just gonna stay off of it and see how it feels tomorrow.

no.

tell me more about your knee. what were you doing when the injury occurred. where does it hurt. swelling/bruising? instability?

Quick! While its hurting go to the gym. Lift some weights. Squat, leg press, leg curl/extensions, etc. Take advantage of this rare opportunity!

I took a soccer class and we had a class tournament today. We were playing our 3rd or 4th game and I went up for a header with a guy from another team and we collided in the air and when I came down instead of being upright, all my weight came down on my left leg and bent it backwards at the knee. Think about jumping as high as you can and then coming down on one leg with your knee bent so far your ass is touching your heel and that's a good picture of what happened. It sucks too because I was playing well before that but that knee has been giving me trouble for a couple of months.

It hurts inside my knee like under my kneecap but pretty much only when I try to move it. If it's just laying there it doesn't really hurt too bad. There's not too much swelling or bruising that I can tell from my very limited knowledge of medicine. I don't know what you mean by instability but I can't really walk on it or put weight on it and I'm pretty much just trying to let it lay flat and not move.

It was. Hitting the ground was followed by rolling around on the ground followed by trying to walk/run it off, followed by realizing I couldn't walk or run it off followed by sitting on the sidelines followed by watching my team lose without me followed by trying to play again later followed by much more pain when I actually got the ball one last time followed by realizing I was really hurt and very well could have made it worse by trying to play again.

It sucks because now I can't work tomorrow and because I've never had any real injuries past a twisted ankle or something. No broken bones, no sprains, no tears of any kind. This is my first legit major injury and I've led a fairly active life.

No. I'm still holding out hope that it will magically repair itself overnight and I won't have to do anything to fix it. But I plan on going to one in a day or two.

Get it looked at ASAP.

I felt some instability a few months ago playing basketball and went to get it checked out. Turns out it was a very mild ligament sprain. I was able to play full strength again in a matter of weeks with no worries. I wore a neoprene knee brace for like 2-3 months and now I'm fine...

FYI, TKE-Teg just had ACL reconstruction surgery over the summer and did a lot of rehab... if you have any questions and that is what you think you did shoot him a PM...

Does anyone know if Campus Health can do anything for me so I don't have to go to a real doctor yet and pay money?

like the health center? sure. that could be a start

it doesn't SOUND like you tore your ACL just because of the method of injury. usually that is a plant and twist motion. and you notice instability with the knee joint. and usually swelling or just bruising around the knee. but who knows.

i'd go to the health center on monday! if it doesn't feel better. that would probably be a good starting point. they have like xray things there i think.

^^ they can probably diagnose you I would imagine... which is all you need to know right away. You aren't going to want to go under the knife until you search surgeons and do your due diligence. It's not something you want to half-ass...

And actually, I've been lucky enough (despite growing up playing basketball & hockey) not to have any major knee injuries. I have major elbow issues from baseball though.

what other problems have you had with it before?

so you fell like with your knee touching your butt? i'm still confused. you could have pulled something definitely like that.

in other unrelated news, that is how i broke my tailbone once. i was rollerblading and when i fell my knee bent backwards and i fell right on my skate. NOT comfortable

No... I landed on it bent in a normal way, but so far that my butt was touching my heel. Like... pull your heel all the way against your butt and then imagine landing with most of your weight like that. Don't ask me why I landed like that. I guess because we bumped in the air. I also have a bruise on my head, but I'm not really worried about that.

^ NO

For the most part Campus Health is just like any other doctor's office. They can do most things there other than ER sort of stuff. Your tuition pays for their services so you might as well get your money's worth

^^hmmm maybe mEniscus

but usually that pain is like in between the joint on the side of the knee. and your knee feels catchy and poppy.

i will put my money on one of the tendons or a ligament. but maybe the tendon that connects the quad to the knee because of the way it was bent during the fall and because he said it hurts behind his knee.

^ i agree. i went there when i had a concussion. well i went the next day...probably not the best decision to wait but whatevs. don't even ask how i got it

Ok, it's about a week later and my knee feels a lot better. I think I only sprained it. I went to the doctor at the Health Center on Tuesday and she told me some stuff. Looking back I remember my knee stretching as I hit the ground and not snapping or popping. I still need to stay off it for a couple weeks though, which should be easy with Christmas Break coming up.

Well first of all, she didn't really sound like she knew what she was doing... which would explain why she was working at the Student Health Center. But she was a regular doctor and not an orthopoedist so... But she wanted to take an x-ray even though she and I both agreed that it was not likely a bone injury. But she basically told me to go see a real orthopoedist and see what they say. But I decided it's likely a sprain based on the fact that I'm still able to walk and there was no swelling or anything and because the pain is definitely subsiding.

at least she didn't attribute it to an STD

that always seems to be the go to answer for doctors that work there

EVERYTHING MUST have come from an STD. crazy college kids.

it really throws them off when you end up with like an ear infection.

Unfortunately you have to be sexually active to have an STD. I wish I at least had the fear that I might have one right now. It's been too long...

hahahaha. well that is what i always told the doctors. i'd go in and be like

"i have pink eye can i have the drops?"

"are you sexually active? have you had sex recently? let me run some tests"

....lots of poking and prodding of the eye...

"yea you have pink eye. we've seen a lot of cases over the past two weeks"

oh i know. but that clearly isn't what i had. and they ask the STD question about like everything.

the only time they DIDNT ask it is when i got a concussion. if they had asked it then, i probably would have left and taken my chances on the streets.

Pain coming from behind the knee cap could be something ACL related, since that is where it is located. Since you didn't have massive swelling and feel a lot better a week later I'm gonna rule out any kind of ligament tear. You might have just stretched a ligament a little too much. When you put too much weight on your knee when its fully bent it stretches the ligaments and is generally not good. But keep an eye on it in the future, if it bothers you again you might have a partial tear or minor miniscus damage.

also, its pretty easy to diagnose an ACL tear based on how much you can move the tibia independently of the knee.

On Tuesday I couldn't fully extend my leg but now I can so I don't think there's any tears or anything in there.

I've been pretty lucky about not injuring myself though. This is by far the worst injury I've had in my life. No broken bones, no tears, just some twisted ankles and soreness from taking some hard blows. I've been playing sports pretty continually my entire life too.

That doesn't really mean you didn't mess something up. Any partially torn ligament isn't going to prevent you from fully extending your knee. Like 69 said, go see someone. (Its a co-pay well spent)
