"Dog frozen to Wis. sidewalk; fat helped it survive

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — A dog weighing more than 120 pounds survived being frozen to a sidewalk overnight, probably because he was insulated by layers of fat, authorities said. The Sheboygan County Humane Society says the "morbidly obese" dog, an aging border collie mix named Jiffy, froze to the sidewalk when he was left out overnight Wednesday. Shelter manager Carey Payne says few dogs could survive the single-digit temperatures, and it was probably the fat that made the difference.

Jiffy's 59-year-old owner was arrested Thursday morning on suspicion of animal neglect, Sheboygan Police Lt. Tim Eirich said. She told police she tried to get the dog inside but couldn't, and instead checked on him every few hours.

The dog is 11 or 12 years old, Eirich said. Shelter workers poured warm water over Jiffy's back end to unstick him from the sidewalk, Payne said, and it was too soon to say whether he suffered any long-term effects."

It's an old lady, give her a break. Animal welfare proponents aren't as bad as "animal rights" activists, but sometimes I can't tell the difference.

"Fremont man charged in 'horrific' animal cruelty case

Fremont, N.C. — Wayne County animal control officials are investigating what they call "the most horrific, disturbing case" of animal cruelty they have ever seen.

Authorities charged Lawton McKenzie, 28, who lives on Old Black Creek Road. Officials declined to release his exact address.

Animal Control Director Justin Scally said he went to McKenzie's house after receiving a complaint.

There, Scally and another animal control officer found dismembered animals, a machete, knives, bowls of blood and what appeared to be a decapitated puppy’s head in a plastic ziplock bag.

Investigators removed 26 living animals from the home.

“It was the most horrific, disturbing case that I have ever investigated,” Scally said. “What we saw I don’t think I will ever forget for the rest of my life."

When officers arrived, they also found a dying goat in a field.

Scally and another officer then loaded the goat, which was unable to move or even lift its head, onto a board, carried it out of the field and rushed it to a local veterinarian’s office.

They were able to save the goat’s life.

“Some of the animals were being burned on what appeared to be a home-made grill of sorts,” Scally said.

Investigators found the remains of a decapitated dog with its front paws cut off, dead snakes, a dead turtle, dead puppies and what appeared to be a goat’s head on the grill.

Other items were unidentifiable. Investigators also found the remains of several predatory birds, such as owls, on the property.

The case remains under investigation, according to officials, and more charges are possible.

Another case of animal cruelty reported
In a separate case, authorities arrested a Goldsboro man after he choked and beat his dog in front of a school bus full of children. Investigators rescued the dog, which survived.

The suspect, Donald Hatem, 47, of the 200 block of Scott Street, will face felony charges of animal cruelty, according to Scally."
