I'm at the breakfast bar at my hotel in Greenville, NC this morning. There's a group of U. Maryland students all wearing warmup suits with "Maryland Ultimate" on the back and UMDFU on the front. I asked one what they were doing in Greenville, and he answered they were here for an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament.

Really . . . an Ultimate Frisbee Team? They all looked as geeky as you would imagine.

I truly hope that NCSU isn't spending taxpayer money to have an Ultimate Frisbee Team.

Don't get me wrong, Ultimate is a mildly geeky sport (mostly due to the lack of officiating).

But of all the people to talk shit about being geeky...fuck.

Does a dude that takes photos of skanky washed up sluts really have room to judge anyone...about anything?

college ultimate frisbee is usually a club sport ... teams don't get any more funding than any other school club.

and ultimate players can be pretty hardcore.

not many people i know would be willing to lay out completely horizonally over hard, frozen ground in order to catch a disc, much less train for anything 5-6 days a week.

Why does this creepy fuck even have internet, much less insist on posting here?

Did he get run off of myspace, craigslist, and all the other sketchholes on the internet?

^ Really. It's a lot more of a sport than golf. Constant jogging/running, jumping, hitting other people (sometimes). Sounds like someone is jealous they never played frisbee football.

I played Ultimate for fun my first two years of college, both casually (albeit every night with a fairly competitive group) and in intramural leagues.

The thing that will always bother me is the lack of officiating. There were a number of toe-drag type scores in my IM games that got waved off by the other team because that's just the way it works. I chalked that up to the general immaturity of college kids playing IM sports (myself included), but then I went and watched an intercollegiate tournament out of curiosity and the same shit happened.

Fucking hippies.

I wish I could throw a frisbee better...because I would have loved to have gotten into ultimate more in college.

And most of the ultimate players are pretty damn athletic.

if they aren't sponsored by the school. like if they are intramural or club they usually have to raise their own money for uniforms and stuff.

usually. i don't know all the rules. i'm just saying.

besides, i don't really get what is wrong with extracurricular activities.

yeah, i'd like to see you play a game of ultimate. then lets see how tuff you are. People talk shit about ultimate because they only ever see people standing out on quads tossing a frisbee back and forth and listening to some shitty music or something, but it is not an easy game to learn. Especially when the people who tend to play are exceptionally skilled.

^ the only rules are that you self referee fouls, you can't run with the disk, usually have 10 seconds to throw w/ pivot foot, and to have a good attitude.

Oh wow. Not at all. Feel free to read all of them: http://www.upa.org/ultimate/rules/11th

And iphotou, there are FOUR NCSU teams in Greenville right now for Ultimax. The two current Men's and Women's teams and two veterans teams of ex-NCSU players.

I understand, but I hear from people that don't see Ultimate as a real sport because of the lack of rules. So it's good that they can understand the big main rules, but they know that there is a well maintained rule book full of intricate details to keep the sport the same across the world.
