I did also test drive the 135i and holy shitballs I enjoyed it. It reminded me a lot of my 944's low end torque. GOD THAT low end torque is incredible and sooooo smooth... There really wasn't any turbo lag that I could notice. The model I drove had the sport package. Very agile vehicle and the transmission was a smooth, though a bit "slow" maybe in allowing me to smoothly shift the gears. The engine didn't rev as freely as I thought it would (took me a second to get used to the delay in the rev matching on downshifts). Very nice interior, hardly any lean in some mild curves yet still smooth over bumps/potholes. BMW did a great job on that vehicle. I'd recommend. Hearing the engine screaming at 6,800rpm was so sweet. While I didn't really feel like I was getting tossed in the back of my seat from all the power, I did notice that the speedometer hit 100 without any hesitation along the way. While the vehicle doesn't have a mechanical limited slip, the car still felt planted even under heavy load at low speeds (I never disabled TC). I felt sexy in the car. There I said it.
And while this review may suck, I can only say this... Go out and test drive it for yourself, and maybe some of this will make sense.

if my tach went up to 20K, but realistically i could only rev to 8, then you wouldnt go around saying you have a 20K redline. 12/7/2008 7:43:12 PM |

I guess. What's the difference between "redline" and "max RPMs" then? I know the latter isn't a term, but realistically the RX-8 can go up to 10,000 as well as your hypothetical car that can go up to 20,000.12/7/2008 9:34:58 PM |

could just be a heavy-ish flywheel. This is understandable on a luxury type of car, as it makes it a lot easier to start from a dead stop.
As far as "redline" vs "max rpms" :
If you consider the "redline" to be literally where the red line is on the tach, it does not always mean it is exactly at the rev limiter. For example: the V6/GT Mitsubishi Eclipse has a 6000 rpm "redline" on the tach but a 6200 rpm rev limiter. If you are using the term "redline" to essentially mean the same as "rev limiter," then it may seem like a pointless/dumb distinction.
For the Rx-8, the rev limiter is I believe 9000 rpm, meaning you would want to shift before the needle physically crosses the red line on the tach. You can reflash the ECU to raise it of course (Racing Beat PCM flash goes up to 9300), allowing the needle the physically go past the red line on the tach without hitting fuel cut. I've driven a completely stock Rx-8 once and it falls off pretty hard after 8500, so you might as well shift before you get to the "redline," in both the literal sense of the tachometer and the sense of the rev limiter.

^i think you misunderstood his question. He's saying that because his tach says 10,000rpm that he can rev that high. 12/9/2008 1:00:24 PM |

I understand that. I have a ~20lb flywheel for the v8 944 (iirc) It revs pretty freely and very easily, but still completely streetable. So I understand the effect of a heavier flywheel and have attributed that as such. There were times when I thought I was still driving the 944 and was caught off guard when the engine didn't respond the same But overall, it is a VERY solid car. I loved it.12/9/2008 1:31:35 PM |
